What technically is the oil pressure gauge reading on the dash?
Is this total pressure for the entire crankcase only ?, How about peripherals such as cam towers, things like oil filter, breather hose, lubrication into the timing chains, etc.,?

HGP, sorry, can't answer your question, but aren't you the guy that with little to no exp pretty much rebuilt your engine because the heads were messed up?? Glad to see it's still running (I assume) and you are still workin' on it.

I think the oil pressure is measured with the oil pressure sensor gauge located on right top of engine and as a general guide should rise approx. 10 psi for every 1k rpm.
But maybe that didnīt answer your question.. ?

It can only measure the psi at the point where the measurement is taken. The oil pressure is not going to be the same everywhere inside the engine. Why do you ask?

The pressure is case pressure (internal passages, not the pressure in the air space that the crank spins in). There is some loss between the pump and the gauge, especially at higher flowrates, but it's marginal. You can assume that the gauge reading is what your bearings are seeing, with the exception of a blocked or abnormal restriction in any of the oil passages. The pressure at the cam spray bars is marginally less, but again, you can assume your gauge pressure is what is at the spray bars.
The filter pressure is much less as the oil is pumped by the scavenger pump, then goes to the cooler and back to the tank. The hoses are under case (not oil passage) pressure. Last edited by MotoSook; 10-17-2005 at 12:01 PM.. |
