Can you smack the knuckle like one would do on a VW or any other car? If so take a baby sledgehammer or a BFH and smack the knuckle a with a couple of good wacks (on the section that holds the tie rod). It should just pop out. I would wait to see other suggestions but that is usually the standard way to do it rather than a puller.

Let us know what works, I'm about to do the job myself.

I'm beginning to think that nothing is ever easy on a Porsche...

HEAT is your friend. Propane is ok but acetolene works faster. It's amazing how things pop apart once that red glow appears. Good luck, Allan

If I understand the situation correctly..why not take the castle nut off...turn it upside down on the tie rod bolt( flush) and use an air-hammer on it? Wil pop right off and not destroy the threads. If you're not re-using the tie rod end...then the upside down nut step is not required.

FORK!

1 fork (manual, not air) and 3 whacks of large hammer. I also had let it sit with a little WD40 on it over night.

Wil, i think you may have mis understood.

A bigger hammer is always the correct solution to stubborn problem on a 911.

With your two or three jaw puller, apply some knarly tension on it, then a few good wacks with a larger hammer should shake it lose. Give it a try!

pmajka:

Did I really mis-understand?

I'm talking about using a reciprocating action air hammer with a blunt "tip"...

...to be used instead of a BFH..... like I suggest to "Muffin Man" in my 1-02-2005 post answer ( of 10:12 PM.. to help find it)... to "Muffin Man's" posted pics of 1-02-2005 ( 8:42 PM).

.....what am I missing ???...

This has never failed me......

First, rap on the side of the arm with the round part of a ball peen hammer. This moves just enough metal to open the hole a fraction by spreading the metal.

Take a piece of metal and stick it under the arm next to the tie rod so the metal (like square tubing or angle) goes from under the arm to the floor and fits firmly. Wood is too soft for this.

Now get a big brass hammer and whack the tie rod. Since nothig can flex with your metal piece going to the floor, it will pop right out.....guaranteed......

I think he already got it loose with a fork and three wacks from a big hammer.

I don't want to derail your thread but I just pulled my tie rods today, to replace with turbo tie rods. When I pulled the boot back on the steering rack I found a cracked retainer washer and a blown bushing picture should be attached. Obviously this is the source of much of my front end problems. It looks easy enough to put back together if i could find te parts. I have spent most of the night looking at the Porsche parts catalog which does not illustrate inside the steering rack, and i have not found any rebuild kits online. People are rebuilding racks so I figure these parts have to be out there. Any ideas, I can't even get a part number. Thanks for any help and again sorry to send the thread in a different direction.

Removing tie rod end

I used the pickle fork today and it was a snap to dislodge the strut side of the tie rod end. (That is with the help of a BFH) However, removing the steering rack side was more difficult. The yoke that passes through the tie rod bushing would not come off, and the Bentley manual was of no help. Luckily the other side came apart easily and I realized I could leave the yoke and bushing on and unscrew the entire assembly from the rack.
Good luck,
Hugh
