Driver's door pull
Before I get flamed, I agree this is probably a very stupid question, but...
Why doesn't the driver's door on an early 911 have a means to pull it closed?

Hey, Hi:
Your post slipped off to the 2nd or 3rd page, & I saw it while trying to catch up after a day or so. On the old cars, I don't think the hand hold on the passenger's side is for closing the door. I believe it is for the passenger to hold on to during spirited driving - but is handy for closing the door. I also believe Porsche thought one on the driver's side might get in the way of the driver at some time, plus the driver wouldn't have a reason to hold on to it during "spirited driving."

save weight is always a good answer. Why did you remove that? "To save weight."
Ha Ha that's my standard answer.

So how did Butzi expect you to close the door when the targa top is on and the window raised?

You can pull on the map pocket....the solid one forward of the one that opens. Not the best leverage, but it works.
...At least that's what I used to do.... ![]()

I solved the problem by making a discreat door pull out of a black nylon strap (one used on backpacks, outdoor gear, etc) and placing rivets in both ends. I then doubled it over to create a small loop which is attached to the door behind the front-most armrest by the allen bolt. The bolt still goes through armrest and then through the rivets into the door. Weighs next to nothing, is barely visible and works like a charm.

That's an awesome fix!
But I guess my question remains, was this an oversight? What did they intend for you to do? The car is so well thought out, it seems like it must be me that's missing something.

Actually it was designed that way. In fact in the Porsche Factory manuals the supplemental section for 69+ cars states that the front map pocket is to be used to pull the driver's door closed. I have owned my 69 since 75 and have always thought it stupid.
