odometer quit turning
 

I seen discussions on a failing plastic gear inside the gauge. Is this a DIY job or should I send it to Hollywood speedo?

Depends; are you good at working with small, fragile mechanical devices? Do a search. There are a couple of step-by-step threads on this repair that are ALMOSt fool-proof. Also ck www.odometers.com web site. If you do decide to do it, I would suggest that you DO NOT try to remove the needle, you can work around it. Tedious,but doable. If you're the impatient type, or easily frustrated, send it off!

I've done two of them, the one in my car and a spare on a shelf in the garage.
It all depends on your skill level, only you can determine that.
If you have good manual dexterity, have patience, and cal tell the difference between the right amount of force and too much force, you can do this task.

Building r/c airplanes probably qualifies as working on small fragile mechanical devices? Unfortunately I no longer have the time to spend on r/c but feel up to speedo repair task. I imagine the bezel scratches very easily and is thus a pain to remove.

Looking at the lighting on all 5 gauges it seems the left 2 are brighter than the other 3. This may be an opportunity to improve the speedo? Also, the odometer tenth-of-a-mile wheel, the one with white background, seems a little dingy. Maybe I could use some isopropyl-alcohol to clean it.

Building model airplanes and r/c------perfect!! You are qualified!!!

If you clean the bulbs or replace them, and clean the inside of the guage housing and paint it white or silver, that will brighten up the lights quite a bit vs. a 21 year old guage. It still won't blind you but it wil lbe better.

Replacing the bulbs didn't do squat. I did manage to fumble and drop a bulb in the socket hole. It's been rattling in there for 6 mos. Maybe the gauge is dirty etc. I test drove a -87 turbo with perfect gauges; would love to have my gauges look like that! Maybe I should have upgraded the entire car?!?:)))

The gears are ~$30 with shipping; pretty reasonable I guess. I'll post pics of the progress...

I guess this is classic... The already broken gear virtually disintegrated during dissassembly. The gauge is pretty easy to take apart and you don't have to remove the face either.

I had a chance to drive a friend's narrow body 911turbo with a g50/50, engine goodies and track suspension yesterday. My car felt like an oldsmobile os after that ride; man I'm hooked now.
