bbs fan wheels

Anybody know why BBS fan wheels are no longer used much? They seem like a great idea. Just speculating, but is it because back in their day, brakes weren't as big as they are now and were over worked, therefore requiring more cooling?

Many newer wheels do the same thing i.e pump air across the brakes, take a good look at the turbo twists, the twist isn't purely artistic.
