It's a nice car, but I don't know that I'd pay 18K for it just to get a new paint job.

That is a 7,500-10,000 car. The 18.5 is a good joke.

I dont know, I read the description. Seems high at first yes, but it is a low mile SC (rare) and should be almost perfect. Guess it depends on what you are looking for.

Two ways to look at it- if you want a nearly cosmetically perfect SC in white, yes the car is worth it; its a 10-12k car with what is realistically 10k in bodywork were you to have it done.

On the other hand, if its not going to be a garage queen then quickly it becomes just a nice SC, so you're likely to take a whack on it.

While its low miles (exceptionally, perhaps) I don't see that mechanically its necessarily anything special. So, the question is, do you want a driver or a queen?

I bought a very similar car (fresh awesome paint - $9k in reciepts, no bodywork underneath, SC Targa) for ~$14k. YMMV. 7.5-10 is nonsense, 12.5 is low for a very very clean one.

Seems only slightly high, although I normally think in terms of early P-cars, like mine, which are worth more.

If K. Roman thinks it could be worth 7.5K, then I'd like some of what he's smoking.

It's a '79 SC with a bare metal repaint and about 60k miles on the original engine. Used to be guards red, family owned for about 21 years.

AND it's a TARGA. We all know that as nice as they are they take a hit on resell over coupes.

I don't see whats so desirable about an SC Targa, in white. The miles aren't that low. So its been freshened up, so what? You could find one that's in mint condition with lower miles and all original for that price.

My thinking here is that it’s already had done most of what I would eventually do to it (as I have done in the past). I know of a few other SC targas around that are in very good condition, they all have at least 25k miles more, and are at least 4 or 5k less.

7 &9 x 16 polished Fuchs with tires 3k
Dual outlet performance exhaust…varies
RD strut brace………………………??
Carrera tensioners
Alum fly wheel
Fitti wheel

By the time you add this stuff up, at least the stuff I care about you’re talking several grand already.

I am talking myself into this one so someone set me straight if you think I am nuts. I am not looking for something rare or something all original so to me stuff like the Carrera valance okay, an SC valance and NO foggies would be even better.

Anyone have some time in the SD area to take a look see ?

This seems like a myth to me, at least in the rocky mountain region. maybe the bargain basement cars are worth more as coupes because they are a better track car candidate, but the nice condition cars don't show a price difference in my experience.

Trader, I gotta ask, you had a very nice '87 Targa that you sold not too long ago, why did you sell it? This SC seems like a pretty good example, but not really exceptional.

7500-10K is for a run of the mill to below average SC. This is a nice one, 13-15K seems more like it. 18K is pretty high, but if it's exactly what somebody is looking for, who knows!

Take into consideration, it's a Targa. That's all. maybe I low balled it, but how many people would pay 14,000 for a '79 Targa? 14,000 will get you a 3.2L or even a high mileage G50.

Always think about what you could resell it for in 6 months. Then it becomes a $13K car. Targa. Color change. Not really low miles.

But since it's an emotional purchase add $2K. So $15K tops.

Andy, Umm ahh well yaa see .... Just one of those things. Started a new business in March and I dumped a ton of personal assets into it, not that the 18.5 that I got for that targa amounts a lot in the big picture business wise.

A few years back I played hockey with a guy that was interested in Porsches. I told him if he was ever looking to give me a call I could help him out since I’ve owned and sold quite a few. So one day this past March he called out of the blue looking for a targa. Took me about a month to make the decision but after one look at the car he just said, “How much?” I gave him the price and he said that’s fine. It was such an easy sale, I didn’t even have to advertise anywhere and I had had that car going on 3 years it was just time to go.

Fast forward to today…. Our business has done very very well and I still have a nice chunk of change from the targa sale, add that to the capital I’ve been setting aside plus I am finally agreeing to sell the Road King, that makes enough for one really expensive car or two medium priced. My wife loves the targas and she really has her heart set one. So the idea is since I am going to be maintaining it and using to a large degree too why not get her a nice targa and keep looking till I find the next one for myself. I am lucky that my wife said “hell yea” to 2 Porsches as long as she always had access to one. We’re both in our 40’s so kids are not really in the cards at this point, we’ve dropped the GDP of a small nation on fertility Doctors otherwise we’d be looking at his and hers 993 TT’s ( I don’t care for the water pumpers).

I’ve been taking my sweet old time while looking. I’ve been to Manheim a couple of times and I scan the 911 markets frequently. One thing about buying cars is the ones I am looking at are not all that rare and I know that if I miss one there is another right around the next corner. I worked a lot this past summer so I knew I would not have all the time to devote to the car search that I would have liked. Now that winter is near by and our business is into a good flow I’ll emerge come spring (or sooner) with one or two new cars.

That’s the long version of my answer
