Question for Javadog
 

Hi JR, Well I got the new thermal switch, stoneguard and foam gasket all back in the car, started it up in the garage and it let it warm up and the temp got to in between the 2nd and 3rd white hash marks and the fan did not come on. As we discussed last week, I ran the wire between the relay and ground and the fan started right up so I assumed it was the switch. I was told the new thermal switch I got from Pelican was set to come on at around 110. My friend Dick Thorpe told me I should take it out and drive it rather than just start it up in the garage. Was wondering if you had any thoughts. Thanks!! Murf

First, I don't know what year of 911 we are talking about here, so I am going to guess about a few things. I can't say for sure that that the switch you put in will turn your fan on at 110C. Did you note any temperature markings on the thing before you installed it? Second, assuming your oil temp gauge is accurate, halfway between the 2nd and 3rd hash marks would be 105C, if I am guessing correctly about your gauge. Was it higher than halfway? Look closely at the left edge of the gauge from the right side-you should see some small temperature markings for each hash mark. Maybe you didn't have the car hot enough.

Driving the car until it is warmed up and then letting it sit and idle would probably build a little more heat into it.

If your original problem was that the fan didn't come on and you had the stock fan switch in the cooler, I can understand that. The stock switch doesn't turn the fan on until 120C or so, if I remember correctly, and none of my 911s or 930s ever get that hot when driving.

If you want, install a switch inside the car and run the wiring to that. Then you can turn on the fan whenever you like.

If you want to test the switch, you can do so with a pan of hot oil on the stove, a cooking thermometer and an ohm meter. It would be a bit of a pain, now that the switch is already in the car, but it would tell you for sure what you have.

Oh, and on my guage there is the bottom red mark then three white hash marks and then the top red mark. Murf
