We call 'em roundies. :)

Is a roundie like a rim job? And just what is a rim job anyway? Polishing only the rim of a wheel ?

Stimulation of the anus of another person or animal with one's tongue and/or lips for sexual gratification.

What else would you like to know?

Never heard them called rims until recently... I have always heard them referred to as either wheels, mag wheels, mags, or alloy wheels. Rims sounds like a bad case of local slang....like homey or bling...that have been spread due to the current low budget shows that make up our 200+ cable channels and nationally syndicated talk shows.

Someone begs to differ:

As a proper name....http://www.irregardless.com/ ,

As a word employed to portray humor http://www.irregardless.org/ , an obvious point of this thread!

As a competitor forum site....http://www.irregardless.us/.

For a somewhat more exhaustive discussion of the term, (for those with more free time than garage space) check out http://www.getitwriteonline.com/archive/081002.htm

I must leave now to go and try to make room in my garage for the P-car :D

unless i don't disunderstand miscorrectly, wheels on rides became rimz when the modulars hit the scene in the late 70's, early 80's.

People would buy a wheel center along with some crazy off-set rims.

Now we just have nuts, going away from bolts, and welding different rims on Fuch centers.

And everyone wonders why immigrants have so much trouble learning English:eek:

island911 10-23-2005 12:17 PM

George Bush made me do it.

Bush hate english speaking immigrants.

I'm guilty. I did a search and used the term "rim" recently to describe a bare wheel.
But, I am smart enough not to use the term "absolutely ignorant " to describe someone who does. Go Figure ? ;)

I seem to recall in the 60's& 70's ,every aftermarket custom rim being called" mag wheels". Irregardless of it being made of steel or aluminum... Does anyone else remember this being the case? Could have been a Kintucky thang. Dan

Mark Wilson 10-23-2005 01:05 PM

How about totally ignorant?

The term "mag" was popoolar when I was younger as well. It was "mags" or "mag wheels" though. If someone had said "mag rimz", they woulda been sent to the Group W bench.

That was common because most of the alloy wheels (and many steel wheels and hubcaps) were styled after the magnesium wheels of the era.

I think it's a generational thing... the new car enthusiasti is all about looks, sound, etc...
This board is "generally" more interested in function and functionality of all things Porsche.

Function = wheel, as in 9 and 11 inch Fuchs wheels.

Cosmetic = rims, as in "nice rims, man".

Just my opinion, it's all good.;)

Hence my inclusion in the archives of the ridiculous, along with "disremember"....

Glad someone was paying attention.
