Speedometer needle jumping at start?
1980 SC. Sometimes, when the ignition switch is turned to start, the speedometer needle jumps up to 30-40 m.p.h. indicated but drops right back to 0 after releasing the key to run when the engine starts. The speedometer works fine. I noticed after reviewing the wiring diagrams that the 12v source for the speedometer(red/blk wire) goes through the ignition switch. Any ideas what might be causing this? Thanks.

I am still wondering about this one. I received some excellent suggestions on what could be causing this(thanks Jim, Ron, JW, and N.H.S.) but nothing has worked. I agree with JW that as long as the speedometer works, it is no big deal but I still would like to solve this. I know now that the red/blk wire connects the speedometer to #13 fuse which is an X connection that does not get current when cranking, only at the run position. When the key is to run, before start, the speedo has current. When the ignition is turned to start, current is interupted but the needle jumps. I also noted that in looking at a wiring diagram for a turbo, the red/blk wire goes from the speedo to the #11 fuse which is not on the X connection but I believe the turbo speedo is wired up the same. Any thoughts? Thanks again.
