Fluids change question in my 1991 C2 Turbo
Guys,
Time to change clutch & differential fluid as i am approaching the 30,000 miles mark really fast.Besides the oil change do i need to change any other fluids at 30K mile.. The tech who will changing them is not a Porsche trained so i would appreciate if there is any specific procedure to follow with those 2 fluid changes..I also need to know what kinda fluids are recommended for the clutch and the differential ? Thanks |

I'm not super-familiar with 964's, but it should be a G-50 similar to mine. The tranny/diff are one unit, one set of fluids. On the drivers side there is a fill plug up on the side of the tranny. Remove this first. Tell your tech NOT to drain the fluid until the fill plug is out. I'm guessing you should be using Mobil Syn gear oil - check your owners manual. You simply fill the tranny until it starts running out of the fill hole. Hopefully a 964 owner will chime in and confirm this. You should change your engine oil. Drains from both the engine and the oil tank. Comes out fast. Remind your tech only to check oil level when the engine is at operating temperature. You are also due for a valve adjust. You won't be teaching your tech to do this. So the big question is, why are you training your tech to work on your Porsche? Aren't there qualified Pcar techs in Kentucky? |

The 30K service was done about 4 years/10,000 miles ago that included the brake & trans/differential fluids.The valves were adjusted at that time too and when i bought the car i had the new plugs put in at the time of compression/leakdown. The guy that's going to work on the car is very thorough and an honest gentleman and i don't think changing fluids is a rocket science. |
If the brake/hyd clutch fluid hasn't been changed in 4 yrs. it's way overdue

Bill - on a C2 (ABS car), do you need the Bosch Hammer to properly flush/bleed brakes?

The nearest P-tech is an hour away from me so it's pretty convenient for me if i can have simple stuff done here locally.The dealership always makes you drop off the car meaning i would not only have to arrange the ride back to my place but i will also need a ride to go pick up the car the following day.The dealership also charges $180 for an oil change where as i pay $80 parts inclusive here locally,so heck why not... Bill, Since Don is not familiar with the C2 Turbos so do you agree on changing trans/diff oil the way he suggested ( no offense to you Don ;) ) Thanks.. |
Yasir, to bleed the brakes for the Turbo you don't need the hammer. If you have a set of manuals, the instructions are listed there. Email me off line and I can fax them to you if needed.
For trans oil, I went with Mobile one (synthetic 75-90 if I remember correctly). The PO had swepco and I can say for my car, it didn't like it (chattering of the diff). It also shifts better while warming up. Lots of dialogue on this topic on Rennlist 964 board. For changing your clutch hyd system....oh my, that's fun. It's not surprising this doesn't happen very often. Not that it's hard, you just need some extra joints and dexterity to get at the fittings. |

I believe that the turbo has ABD, no? If so the "hammer" is needed to cycle it
