Front height problem
 

hi all,

I have a 1977 Carrera 3.0 EURO, with a 993 twin turbo bodykit from AIR. Now after rougly 7 years (No I haven't been working on the car the whole time) I finally got it on the streets.

Now, the kit results in lighter front end and therefore the front is much too high and I would like to lower it. I've installed new bilstein shock inserts and turned the height adjustment screws in order to lower it, however the height is far from being how I want it to be.

I took the car for a drive and hit the brakes very hard, then the front almost reached the desired height on one side but not quite on the other (passenger side). After a short while, however, the height increased again.

Can anyone help me out here, what can I do? Must I buy new inserts or can I do something ?

Nice to see yet another European on the board. How many Porsche cars are there in Iceland ? The driving season are rather short, no ?

Not sure I can pinpoint your problem. Would possibly help if we could see some pictures.

Sounds like you need to re-index the front torsion bars.

Do a search here on front torsion bar indexing for some pictures. You will need to jack up the front end to get the preload off the torsion bars, then remove the adjuster screws (count the number of turns to remove) which are in the torsion bar caps at the back of the control arms in the aluminum crossmember. Then pull the caps off and reinstall, rotating them one notch (this is what "reindexing" is); to lower the car, you will rotate the left cap in the clockwise direction, and the right cap in the counter-clockwise direction.

Then reinstall the adjusters the same number of turns back in. Drop the car and you should be lower at the front, probably about 1 inch. If you need to adjust more, use the adjusting screws (turning them "in" raises the car, "out" lowers it). If your screws do not provide the range of adjustment you need, reindex the caps another notch.

Just one thing to ad. When you jack up the front of the car, jack up both sides. If you only jack up one side the sway bar will load the torsion bar and you won't get the cap off.

Pre 2000 Porsches are not so many, i.e. the number of 911 Porsches is somewhere around 30. However later models are quite popular, e.g. so far this year there have been registered 51 new and 39 used Porsches. Cayenne is obviously popular in Iceland :)

The driving season varies between owners, some drive their cars all year round. But, then there are others, like me, who only drive on sunny days :)
