1977 911 oil capacity?

Sorry, I meant 1977 911.

My friend just bought a '77 911. He took it in to get an oil change and they told him his car required 16!!! quarts of oil. I told him that he was crazy for paying for it and that I'd find out what the oil capacity really is (or close to it.)

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Jay

He's crazy all right. The actual capacity is around 14 qts. These cars typically take around 12 per oil change because of residual oil in the lines.

Did he take it to one of the quick lube joints that you drive through like Valvoline, Pennzoil, etc? I wouldn't take any of my cars there unless I was looking to get a new engine for free...

I wonder how they checked the oil?

How can these little motors hold so much oil??

How many lines and how long are they that it can hold 3 1/2 to 4 gallons! of oil.

The most oil I'd ever seen before was my '94 RX7. It was a small 1.3 liter, but it had dual oil coolers and required 6 quarts for an oil change.

I'm still blown away.

Thanks for the reply, by the way.

Much of the oil stays in the oil tank and the engine uses a dry sump oiling system. (often are larger capacity due to the nature of the design) The cooler lines run the length of the car. The oil coolers are in the front. These engines do not use coolant as you surely already know, so the oil is part lubricant, part coolant.

Check your oil level only when the engine is: warm / hot. full operating temperature. Filling it cold will cause more problems, which is why many won't take to a jiffy lube. I won't either.
welcome,
Doug

I kinda figured that the oil helped cool the motor but I didn't know the engine is a dry sump.

Thanks for the help, now maybe I can help my friend.

The best thing you can do for a new Porsche owner is send him to this site before he screws something up.

Trust me, I almost made some big mistakes when I bought my first 911.
He will thank you later.
