Do heat exchangers fall off?
Hi guys,
Thought my 3.0 had pulled a head stud, got down and had a good poke around and discovered the left hand heat exchanger had separated from two of the tubes which bolt to the head at the points indicated by the white arrows. Is this common? Can i weld them back together? or is it SSI time Cheers Tim

well...most of us have more trouble getting the heat exchangers off when we want to due to the damn studs but yes..igeuss if several of the studs broke and you had something catch underneath it coud separate. Might as well go ahead and try to take the rest off..do a search and see what techniques to use to lessen your chance of snapping more exhaust studs.....

Getting them off could be problematic. I would check first to see if it might be possible to weld them in situ. If not...

Split50,
I think you are saying that the outside sheet metal is separating from the exhaust manifolds. Mine doesn't even have the metal collars that are shown in your photo. My sheet metal comes up to the exhaust manifolds where they attach to the heads, and just ends - and there is no air tight seal. I assume that this allows a small amount of air that is around the engine, into the cabin heat. I have not worried about mine, because I don't have any exhaust leaks. It does rattle around a little, but not enough to bother me. Rex

The studs and nuts are all still there, the exchanger has separated from two of the pipes bolted to the heads.
I might try to weld them without removing anything. I have a spare exchanger I could fit but I don't want to break any studs as the car is my daily driver, although four of the nuts would be easy to get at. I suppose total sealing isn't vital, I just don't want to damage the engine or have the exchanger fall off. Cheers Tim
