'75 911S sitting/smoking bad

Hi guys, fairly new to Pelican. Looking for some insight. I just found a '75 911S with about 150k on the clock, been sitting for about 5 years. Starts up but smokes really bad, almost embarrasing. I can get it for $3k (runs/drives/stops). The owner is not sure if it needs a rebuild or perhaps this could just be from bad fuel and gummed up injectors. Is there such a thing as just a top end rebuild in these things? What's something like that cost? Is it hard to do yourself if you're fairly mechanically inclined? Or could I get lucky and it's just a matter of draining the tank and getting the injectors cleaned up? Thanks for any input you have. I just bought a '69 911T coupe from a fellow pelican (ricks911, haven't picked up yet) but it will be my project to repair some rust underneath next year. This will be my driver when I don't want the '69 to get wet. Thanks, Dan

Firstly $3k is too high BUT again that depends on condition.

The 75 is not exactly desireable AND it is just shy of being galvanized...

Sitting for five years?? Inside or outside??
RUST?
You will need an entire brake system - period
Yes, you can do a top end (motor out) fairly easy
.. but if it is original miles on motor then you will be heading toward complete rebuild for sure.
Many seals will be bad and start leaking oil like crazy - again - rebuild

Car is worth $1k most likely BUT I could be wrong - post pics and lots more detail.

If you want a daily driver DO NOT start with another project!
Buy a sorted 912 CHEAP!!!!
Or find an SC or???

Hope this helps

66,
Odds are some moron filled the oil tank cold with the engine stopped. This puts about two extra quarts into the system and causes lots of smoke. Dealers are notorious for this, since they have no clue about oil tanks or Porsches. Check the dipstick cold/ stopped and see where the level is. Sounds like a good deal.

Good point, but that is most likely not what is going on here.

The car SAT for FIVE years - any car will smoke after sitting that long.

I think the car is worth around $2. I just bought a roller '77 for a race car project for $1100 with a gutted interior, 16x6 and 7 Fuchs, straight with no rust. I felt I got a good deal for a non-sunroof, rust free chassis.

A running driving 911 for $2k would still be more than if you just went and bought a nice one when you are finished with it. Just add it up. I bet you would be over 10k when you are done.

Smoking

I have ressurrected many 911's that have been sitting for longer than that. It might be as simple as lots of oil in the heat exchangers that needs to burn off. It will be very embarassing for about 15 minutes.

My '70S had sat for 15 years before I started it up. It smoked like a chimney... Someone had poured too much oil in the oil tank... That engine is now in my '66 car and runs like a champ.

I appreciate everyones input regarding this matter. I'm crossing my fingers that too much oil/bad gas/gummed injectors are the only problems. I'm buying the car sight unseen from another state...way away. The owner has owned for 10 years, about 5 years ago it started to smoke a little bit and he parked it. Now 5 years later he went to drive it. It started up, and he drove away. The car smoked so bad he was embarrased and went back home. Now I enter the picture. He accepted $3k, but after some of the replies I'm thinking maybe too much??? If I get lucky I just stole it, if I'm not lucky I might be looking at a $6-8k repair? Then the car is no bargain. I'm still looking for more replies if anyone has experienced something similar. He claims it was not and is not leaking oil. It sounds like it just might be too much oil, bad gas, and gummed up injectors. Are there any other tell tale signs that it might need a rebuild before I complete the transaction. I've only sent the deposit so far. I'd rather eat that then the whole amount. Thanks, Dan

Also, if I do decide to complete the transaction does anyone have any contacts/desire to pick up the car in Albuquerque, New Mexico and deliver to Pittsburgh, Pa. I have 10 qoutes for $800. I'm hoping maybe someone is coming this way or knows someone that would do it for less...like $500 or so? I'm in no rush for it to be delivered since I'm going into winter here.

Why don't you see if the owner will take the car to a local shop and have a PPI done at your expense . You'll know alot more about the car that way and maybe the owner will negotiate a little more depending on the out come .

dude, is it a coupe or a targa? i think 3k is a good deal, and if i find one like that i am gonna jump on it. coupe only. i want to backdate one with a hotrod motor.

i revived a 75 car that sat 14+ years. just go ahead and let the seller think the motor is blown. when you run it for awhile (after changing oil, siphoning old gas putting in fresh) it will smoke like a spy car for awhile. it will clear up. my 75 car is still kickingA after my $6k car CPR. my brother is driving it now. nice buy.

what i did:
cleaned & sealed gas tank.
new injectors, clean fuel dist, full tuneup, clean oil, REBUILD brakes and new rubber lines, fixed a few oil leaks, new WUR, new filter, new accumulator. i did install a carrera cooler with fan, and now i swear the car feels faster than my SC. you will love it.

Look for and read a recent thread about a guy who had a car that smoked after sitting for a similar amount of time. He just drove the piss out of it and the rings freed up in a few miles. Now, it runs very well. Someone know this thread?

Not to be a dark cloud(no pun intended) its the dreaded 2.7 motor too.I would ask the seller more questions if you could.

Huh?

I already stated my concerns with this deal.......

I say BIG mistake.

Why?

1) It's a 1975
2) Not galvanized
3) Sitting for 5 years +?
4) Buying sight unseen
5) RUST RUST RUST issues unknown
6) Engine smokes
7) 150k miles - original motor? Oh boy
8) NOT a good investment of time and money
9) You are looking for a daily while you work on your project car???
THIS IS a project - and it won't be cheap. You just cut your 69T
money in half.
10) Will need entire brake system, master and all.
11) Etc............................

My friend you ARE buying a project and not in the best manner - for heaven's sake have someone - anyone (the gardner) look at the car.

A motor that has been sitting will smoke. I just hope he built oil pressure before turning the key for real.

here is my motor that sat, properly pickled for 3 years while I built the tub. Yes, it smoke a whole lot for at least 5 min. It took about 2 weeks for it to run really clean.

Yep still smoking.

It took about 2 weeks for it to run really clean. and now it is spectacular!

Worst case, you part the car and get your money back.
The 2.7 will probably have pulled head studs. New Mexico is very dry, may not have much rust.
Good Luck

Pics noted, nice remedy for failed hood support...remove the funny looking bumps on the front bonnet....And disregard the former bashing of a 1975

Drop a 3.6 in there for a fraction of the HP/Weight ratio of any other machine out there for the cost, and blow by all the yuppies on PCH on a sunny afternoon.

Heh, my '75 is friggan fast, priceless, and a beauty to behold

Actually all 911's from January of 1970 had the full pan galvanized. 1976 and newer were fully dipped.

BTW, 1975 is the last year for emissions exemption in California, so it's worth something to a racer here if you need to unload it.
