Looking for Porsche Machine shop in San Diego
At German Auto Fest there was a Porsche machine shop there from the San Diego area. Nice guys with "state of the art " equipment. I lost their business card. I think it was a 4 man operation. can anyone help? They said they do all the work for the Porsche dealerships in their county.

Could it have been Motor Works, Inc.? They do work for quite a few independent shops around here.

Their phone number is: 619/233-8875
Address: 1625 Coolidge Ave., National City, 91950. One of the principal guys there is Mike Kelley. They have historically done work for a bunch of the independent shops in the County. I don't know where you got the "state of the art" impression. They have modern equipment, but they also have the old machines still around and can work on really old stuff. The last time I was in there they had several 356 cases & a bunch of heads they were making repairs to.

Mike Kelley gave me the "state of the art" impression. He described the machines and the method in which they do things. It was up and beyond the "old school" way valve jobs have been done for the past 50 years. I do assembly of these motors, not machine work. A machine shop guy can razzle-dazzle me easily with their lingo.

Rick:
I wasn't trying to give the impression they were misrepresenting their shop or what they do. I was just saying they can pretty much do anything from the new to the old. I recently had the shock bosses on a pair of aluminum swing arms cut down there. I called around to some (4) other machine shops to see what they would say. Nobody else seemed to know what I wanted, except for a really high end shop that wanted $250 for the job. I got the job done at Motor Works plus bead blasting and welding of my fan housing, which had cracks in 3 different places for $200.

Marv,
No foul! I undersood what you meant. I am in Vermont, and there is nothing here in the automotive machine shop world that is up to the high tech standards that is out there today. Sounds crazy that I have to sent Porsche stuff 3000 miles to get it done, but it is specialized work that even the best machine shop can't do, if they don't know there way around air cooled parts. Walk into a typical shop with a engine case and put 24 time certs on the table and tell them to install them, and they look at you funny. |
