85 owners. Does your center console look like this ?
Is this stock / original, with the seat heating switch in between the nobs for the A/C ? The manual seems to suggest the seat heating switch is located on the outer side of seat on driver side.

Mine has a speaker fader there (front to back adjustment). Same type of wheel adjustment. Perhaps a difference between US/Euro? I dont think I have heated seats, but I can check this weekend for the switch on the side of seat.

My 84 targa looks just like your picture. The fader is disconnected and they make a overlay that covers it once removed.
|
Mine is surely a speaker fader. But it doesn't work anymore. I completely re-did the stereo system. I only have one dial not two like you are showing. Check out the pics......

Ditto I have manual heat no seat heaters. On mine the wheel looks different and is/was a fader front rear. The A/C knobs are the same.
[edit]If you look real close at the picture you posted it shows a seat with little wavy heat lines coming off it. I would guess it is the seat heat controls. Crap I can't even hardly read this post. Very nice picture [edit some more] take that butterfly vent off sitting just behind the console and enjoy A/C all over your body. |
Thanks for your input guys !
Seems the middle space is occupied with different functions. I wonder whats original. And yes dfink, its my seat heating - and it seems to work. I just wonder if it were installed their originally. Yeah - all over my body ??:) |
My 85 Carrera has the speaker fader in the center which yours apparently does not. Must be because I also do not have heated seats.
|
My unmolested 85 has heated seats and the heater controls are on the seat-sides. One control for each seat.
My middle "wheel" is indeed a fr/rr speaker fader control..... Is it possible that the shown "wheel" for seat heat is only for the driver ( as in....heat option for only the driver, where there is no heated psngr seat?). Wil |
So most cars came with the speaker fader in that spot. Makes me wonder if my seat heating really was factory installed there or some PO has been fiddling around with the electrics.
Wil, thats a possibility. I have not actually checked if the heat works in the pass seat. Good idea! Edit: Does the actual switch look like mine on the seat side of your car ? |
I have a fader switch on my ROW '85 in that spot.
|
Anyone want to sell their fader? I want to replace mine and can't find an OEM part anywhere. Thanks.
|
You can have mine. Pm me your address and I'll get it out to you.
|
It's supposed to be for the stereo fader. 85 is the first year they used that switch. Mine has heated seats and they are a two position rocker switch on the side of the seat.
Looks like someone popped yours out to put a variable seat heater control there. Definitely not factory. That looks like an old BMW switch to me. |
Crap, I knew it - non stock.
Curious to know how they managed to make the seat heated when it was not factory made. I need to take the seat apart to see whats really going on in there. Or is it just my imagination that the seat gets hot when turned on ? Maybe its just my spirited driving - wetting my pants. If I pop out the switch there is probably no wire, no nothing. Just the nob. |
Are you assuming that the seats are original, maybe they were replaced also.
|
Markus, I took a look at my 85 as well, and have the same markings as the rest, for a speaker fader. Mine has a non original stereo unit though, so I don't know if it works or not. My car has electric seats, but no switch for seat heaters. If your switch is non factory, then its interesting that whoever did do it got the little graphic on there showing the heated seat symbol....
|
Have not thought of that. The driver seat has full electric adjustment with two large controls on left hand side. But there is no sign of any other switch ever been there. Thats the peculiar thing - if I am right and the seat gets hot - how did they do that?
Edit: Yes Spooty, its an enigma. ;) |
Markus;
Just because you don't have a factory switch for heated seats doen't mean you don't have them. Adding seat heaters to a car not originally equipped with them is relatively easy. There are heating elements that go between the seat foam and covering, some wires, a relay and a switch. No big deal. I have to believe that the best explanation for the switch in your center console is that a previous owner added heated seats, or was planning to. Pulling out the stock fader and installing something in it's place that is not functional would seem a little odd. I would assume that your car didn't originally have them though, as the factory switch would be on the same panel that holds the two round seat adjustment switches. The switch where your fader switch should be is not from a 911-I have no idea what it came from. Take a look under the seats and see if you have a couple of wires that disappear under the carpet, headed towards the center console. A little detective work and you'll likely figure it out. JR |
