Help needed in Kansas!

My buddy Goktekin is having difficulties with the starter in his new-to-him '69 911, just outside of Kansas. He is on the first day of a trip from Denver to Savannah.

Anyone out there that can lend him a hand? Please respond to this thread, i'll be checking regularly.

Here's the background:

Very special '69 911 FS

thanks in advance, Evren

Evren,

Thanks for posting this here.

I have been speaking to Goktekin and he is back underway.

It seems like the starter just gets heat-soaked after an extended drive. I think if it cools a little while it should work.

I have emailed a couple of guys I race with from KS to see if they can help. If not, Pat recommended Imagine Auto in Lexena KS and I forward them onto Gok.

Goktekin sounded fine with everthing, I'm just a little worried how Buket will handle it.

Jess

IIRC, the Bosch starter # is 68srx or something like that. It's the same one used in aircooled VW engines. If he has any more problems, he can probably get one at any big auto parts stores. It's not an exotic Porsche only part.

Thanks Jess, glad to hear it. My thoughts exactly about Buket!... if this is the only mishap they have along the way they will be in great shape.

I had called Paul in a panic 200 miles south of Lebanon after my first gas stop on my own cross country ride, because fuel was dripping from the front left fender. turned out to be nothing important fortunately.

Evren, when they reach KC are they continuing on I-70? If so and they continue to have problems, I am available to help out. Imagine Auto is a first rate shop in KC.

Thanks for all of the help offers. Looks like there is progress - here's the latest:

"We are on the road again. Jump started the car with help of two FedEx guys. Jess is looking for help. We are 70 miles to Salina."

Evren, they are a good 3 hours from KC. Hopefully they can just get there and rest overnight. A bunch of guys I know in KC (mostly 944/951 guys, but know cars), are having a tech day in the KC area tomorrow. I am going to post a link to this thread on their board. I know they would love to help your friends out if help is needed.

I just got off the phone with Aaron at Imagine Auto.

It looks like he will be able to take care of Goktekin tomorrow. Still looking for any locals who would care to help but at least now we have a solid backup plan.

Whoops...I was so busy emailing Evren & Jess, I didn't realize this thread was here. At this point...just a HUGE tip of the hat to all who post here. It seems to me a tank or two of gas, and once in KC, all will be fine? Keep in touch here, folks...I can't help but feel I have a dog in this fight, because I tipped Evren that Jess had the car for sale in the first place. OMYGOD! This means it's ALL my fault! (edit) Evren, is there any way Goktekin can link to this thread? It seems the best cyberspace place to help him through this, and also keep us informed on how he's doing?

Karl from Imagine Auto, and also a member of KCWS, will be working on Saturday to replace their starter! They may become unwilling participants in the KCWS tech session!

Aaron is the guy I've been speaking to. He has been more than helpful, even giving me his cell number to pass on to Goktekin.

I'm sure they will take great care of him.

Kurt, if you get the chance, stop by and say hello.

Jess

edit: Paul, Goktekin is able to (and is) watching this thread on his Blackberry as he drives.

Jess I would, but I am about 150 miles east of KC. These are just a bunch of crazy Porsche guys I know. On the other hand, should they have problems once they leave KC, between there and St. Louis, I will be on hand to help out.

This, I love! Another great example of the Pelican community. Goktekin? If you're reading this, I'll confess...it's ALL my fault. But think about it...this is something you'll be able to relate to with Evren & Ruki for years to come. Ask Evren to tell you about when he called me with gas pouring out of his left fender well, how a roll of tape solved another problem... Ask Ruki how many miles went by before she took her first bite of buffalo jerky, which is now a delicacy to her. I have the feeling that this is an adventure that people live in order to tell their grandchildren about.
Jess, as I emailed...you have been THE MAN throughout all this. Nobody selling a decades old car could be more "stand up" than you have been. This is what a "ROAD TRIP" is all about!

I just experienced this exact problem with the '71 Targa. We replaced the starter but that did not fix the problem. We traced the problem to the lead from the battery to the starter that travels through the 14 pin connector in the engine compartment on the relay board. The connector would heat soak and loose contact with the pin and the new starter wouldn't work until it cooled. We cleaned the connection and this solved the issue. Check this out also.

Here is link to the wiring diagram. Follow the yellow lead from the starter (#2) to the 14 pin (#84) connector. It is on the end of the connector. Also check the connection at the battery and lead at the starter. Either one of those could have come off also.
