Rear Seat Removal Help
Hello Fellow Pelicans,
One of my major winter projects is to remove the rear seats and window shelf from the back of the Targa. The questions are: Is it very difficult? Does it look pretty ugly without them? Is the three piece carpet kit good? Will I have to repaint areas? I did a search and didn't find much. I would like to bolt a sub woofer somewhere back there, too. What do ya think? Drums

I don't know too much about removing the rear seats and the window shelf. But I do know that the bottom of the rear seats are glued down. I put in the subs like you are talking about and I must say it made a HUGE improvement over the factory. I completely redid the stereo system with Alpine head unit and 6CD changer, a couple of amps and upgraded the factory speakers. Good Luck on your project!
Here is a pic of my subwoofers.

Hey Bill,
That looks nice! I bet it sounds great, too! The reason for the stereo is that my wife HAS to have music on whenever she's in the car. It sounds so bad, I can't stand it! If it was up to me, there would be no stereo system-just the sound of that 3.6 behind! Drums

When I first got the car I left the stereo off most of the time too. Especially when I put on a Borla dual exhaust. But now when I drive it, it seems that I'm on the road close to 4 hours. It's nice to have some tunes to listen to, or don't tell anyone, sing along.

wcc.. It's an easy job to remove the seats and window shelf.. The bottom seats glue in.. The seat backs are held in place by the pivots and pivot bolts.. Shouldn't take much over an hour to remove them all.. It's kinda ugly without them imho.. an RS carpet set might be in order..Dan

removing the rear seats and deck is extremely easy. if i remember correct it is 2 big ugly bolts for the outside of the seats, the screws by the seat back straps and a couple others down by the point where the seat backs pivot. i removed mine to put in some speakers and to delete the sound deadening. the seat bottoms are glued to the metal and is pretty ugly underneath without some serious cleaning work and/or paint. when i was done i did not put back in the seat backs or the soundpadding but everything else went back in to avoid some work at this point in time. I'll post some pictures of this tomorow if you would like. i think it looks fine but you can be the judge.

Hey Felix,
Please do send some pics. I do plan on making things look okay after the removal. RS carpet kit, paint, etc., just wasn't sure how much I would be getting myself into. Like the time I took off the window tinting....it all went swimmingly until I got to the rear window [Targa], it was baked on.... Drums

Here's a pic of mine. It isn't a pro job (I did it), but it looks pretty good in person. I've also got a roll bar and harnesses, so it does get blocked from view a bit. Probably one of the easier jobs I've done on the car.

Easy job unless the two large screws holding the seat backs are frozen as were mine. I used some liquid wrench for a couple of days and then a hammer screw to ge the stuck one removed. I left the seat bottoms in. I also did not remove the rear shealf but may later to remove some of the sound deadening. I can send pics tomorrow.

like i said, everything went back in except the seatbacks so that is one way to cover the holes. the right way to do it is like ed did and fab up a new shelf unless you are lucky enough to find one of those rs america parcel shelves. ed, when you did yours did you make the piece that the carpet is mounted to out of fiberglass or something else? also is that carpeting part of a kit you ordered or did you just get something from a fabric store or the like?

I got a rough version of an RS kit from Appbiz for some of it. The replacement piece in lieu of the package shelf, I just cut out from Perlon, and mounted directly to the rubber pad that is mounted on the body back there.
