Help with dead cylinder
Guys, after everything that has been replaved on my 80 CIS I now have a dead cylinder. #2 refuses to fire at all, it's not a miss, it's dead and I checked or replaced the following:
1. New plug wires 2. New rotor 3. New cap 4. changed plugs for #2 cylinder 5. Swapped injectors 6. Did compression check (around 129 to 130 psi) on #2 Interesting enough is that fact that it will idle perfectly even though you can hear drop out in the exhaust pipe, and it has no power, and when I unplug that wire, nothing happens, when I unplug another I hear that cylider drop. I'm stumped, what should I try next?

The intake runner gaskets are new as well as the rubber boots, but I will check again. I did notice that the injector was pretty easy to remove however, and I did spray carb cleaner all around the injector sleeve with no bubbles, or change.

Scott,
You changed the injectors and the problem stayed with #2 cylinder, right? With good compression and fuel that leaves ignition. I would pull the #2 wire, connect it to another plug, restart the engine and verify a spark. If you get spark, remove and either dry off the sparkplug or replace it. No spark, replace the ignition wire.

I did in fact do that pulled the plug and fired it grounding it against the motor, plenty of spark was present, I did that test with two different wires, and two different plugs.

sorry, missed the fact that you swapped injectors on my previous post
, you might want to check the wiring to the injector if all else fails. Those wires live in a pretty unfriendly environment.

Ok, had to work all last night (that's what being an IT employee get's ya) and I started late on this thing today. So this needs to go down in the bonehead hall of fame if we have one. I had the firing order for # and #3 backwards on the distributor. I found this out after I reomed all of the valve covers of course.
Anyway wanted to drop everyone a "thanks." I now have a perfect idle, great power and smooth running.

Happens all the time. Glad you found it.
PS mskar, AFIK, there are no wires to the injectors on an 80 SC. I think you're thinking of a 3.2. |
