Split the case...Look what I found

Found this during my inspection after splitting the case.

It seems like what's exposed is a tube that goes from the thermostat to the oil pump.

Can I use JB Weld to fill this?

What could have caused this?

No, that is quite common. I had the same in my 1977 930 case when I split it. Ok to leave it as is.

Cheers

No Worries, it should be that way. You can clean up the flash(edges) abit when you pull the oil bypass system apart.

You guys kidding me? Whew, that''s good news, but why would they design it like that?

On a side note...The head stud Gods must be smilling upon me. Took all but 30 minutes to do remove 24 studs! Just double nutted the studs and it broke free. No heat needed. At first, I thought this is too easy, I must be pulling out case savers or something. No way it's this easy.

Of course, there's always one bad apple...took a stud extractor to the stubborn stud and it bit in no problems. I was expecting the worse from all the past posts here. Whew.

Yeah, my case was the same...didn't look cool, thats for sure...

I had no problem with that area on the inside. On the outside of the case after the rebuild, this sleeve to case area leaked. I solved it through an archived article here. Look on the outside of the case and you'll see some slots with the sleeve visible. One is outside of the oil cooler pedestal and one is on the inside. I had to J B weld the 2 slots. Search the archives.

It's not so easy to fix this in the car since you have to do a partial engine drop to remove the oil cooler. You may not ever leak there but if you JB while your case is split it's an easy fix. Just make sure it's clean before you JB the areas. I wouldn't use JB inside the case.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll try the JB weld on the outside.

For those interested, here's the link to the area oneblueyedog was refering to...
