Lost trying to mount a Carrera Tail - Instructions anyone?
I've got my deck lid and my carrera tail base all stipped down and painted to match.
The problem is that this deck lid never had a tail mounted on it so there aren't any mounting holes. I purchased the carrera tail seperate from the deck lid and it was dissasembled. I've got the two lower brackets (also refinished) which look like they support the lower half of the tail base to the deck lid from the back side. So far so good. But what about the top and sides? Are there backing brackets for this also? What do they look like? I've got a pile of screws 4 small 2" mouting brackets also, but I don't know where they go. Are there a set of instructions that come with a new tail that someone could email me or post to the net? Thanks in advance, TonyG |
You might want to buy a lid already drilled for the carrera tail. Keep the original lid just in case you want to bring it back to stock:)
Turbo and carrera tails have different hole patterns - FYI. Sorry but I do not have any pics on the installation... |

Thanks for the reply. I did buy another deck lid. My original deck lid is unaltered. However, the deck lid that I purchased was never drilled to mount a Carrera Tail. And there's the problem.... To make matters worse, I've been so busy that I didn't even bother to address the issue before I had both prepped and painted. So now I have to do it after-the-fact :-( There's got to be a set of mounting instructions somewhere. TonyG |
I installed a Carrera tail a few years ago and as I recall I took off the screen on the tail and then installed the tail on the lid using a few of the pre-existing holes that the regular grill also uses. Then you can mark where to drill the additional holes, take the tail off, drill the holes, reassemble the tail and install it on the decklid... good luck!

You should have 2 brackets (red arrows) that mount on the underside bottom. These are for the bolts that you have to drill for. The brackets join in the middle. # 13 & # 14 on Bill's diagram maybe? I really appreciate the help. And I think I've got it figured out. But you're gonna die when you hear this (at least I almost did when I figured this out).... I purchased a used deck lid that had a Carrrera emblem and a Carrera Cab 3rd brake light set of holes drilled. The deck lid was fairly straight so I figured I'd use this deck lid for my SC which would have a Carrera tail mounted on it. Now here I am today looking at the photos you guys have provided and I noticed something funny..... My deck lid doesn't have the 3 tabs hanging down from the top (for mounting points). It's only got the 1 center. The 2 sides are simply not there! Not a problem for the PO with the simple grill mounted. But for me... NO GO. AUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH@#$^#$%!&$%&@$% If I mount this tail to this deck lid, I'd only be able to use the center mount point, and the 2 far outside mount points for a total of 3 vs 5 top mount points. Do you think this would be sufficient? I do track the car at high speeds at WSIR. I don't want something BS flimsy mounted to anything I own. Please speak up and add you experience or .02 cents to this discussion. This deck lid, after some expensive body work, is so perfectly straight with a fresh metailic blue (Hellblau Metallic or something like that.... I'm too pissed to get it right..) paint, color sanded to perfection.... Now what? I hate this restoration crap.... It's making me age too fast. TonG |

I don't know crap about mounting this stuff, but if you need me to hold something, let me know. I'm only 6 blocks away! BTW, Tony's paint job is F'n beautiful. He also put a 993 interior, dash, seats, door panels etc. in an SC its beautiful. Also his six carb set up to replace the CIS, or whatever you call it is a work of art. So much room in the engine compartment its unbelievable. If art is driven by function, its Tony's SC. He also dyno's at about 240 hp. Sorry Tony, hope you don't mind, but you amaze me at what you've done with your car. |

Yo Hugh... I can't believe this crap. I knew I should have bought a factory Carrera Tail with the matching original deck lid... Actually, I have the deck lid that this tail was mounted to. It's just that it was so "rough" that I thought I'd use the one I picked up as a spare since it was about 90% straight to begin with. BTW, I just posted the new SC engine for sale here on Pelican. I bought a modified, twin plug, big valve, big cam, high compression, 50mm PMO'ed, Crank Fired ignition 3.6L engine (all brand new) for my SC. So the almost new SC engine has to go. Or maybe I'll save it for my 914 project... my ha ha (snicker). TonyG |

Can I get a clean photo of the underside of the actual deck lid with the Carrera Tail mounted?

If you want to make the tabs and make a run to San Diego I'll weld them on for you (free of charge), I have a mig welder or we could make the tabs here, I have some scrap. The engine is on a engine stand at the shop. I still need to install the PMO's, the headers, and the crank fire ignition. I've also got a G50 LSD tranny for the car as well... :-) TonyG |

Sorry to hijack, but I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the all-rubber early Carrera tail used the bracket underneath and/or a gasket. I recently picked up a decklid with this tail but it didn't have either. The lack of the bracket led to cone-shaped mounting holes.

I was just going to use fender washers to spread the load, but a bracket would also help seal the lip to the decklid more evenly, but I doubt the mounting holes from this tail match the later Carrera tail. Maybe someone could scan the PET catalog page(s) for it for me? The OE part number for the tail is: 911 512 019 02 Thanks, Craig |

It uses a $30 rubber gasket between the deck lid and the tail. I purchased mine from Performance Products. Under the deck lid, it uses two long brackets (shown on this thread) to spread the load. TonyG |
