supporting trans with engine removed
 

I would like to install my trans while the engine work is being done. I know people do engine only drops while leaving the trans in. My question is: do I need to support the trans in any special way? The trans will likely be mounted by itself for a year or so on a roller (gets it out of the way and I can install a few more components). Is the trans cross member and axles enough to support the trans weight without stressing the trans mounts?

IT is not. You will have to support the tranny. If the car will be left stationary a jack stand will work. If not you need something to secure the transmission to the underside of the car. It's not really heavy so, some sort of cargo strap would be plenty

I have installed an engine twice with the tranny already installed, kind of a PITA.

If anyone ever has to do this I offer a hint that will help:
pull the starter completely out and look in the starter hole to line up the clutch throw out arm to the throw out bearing.
Way easier than trying to do it blind, and way easier than trying to look through some imaginary window (that my car either does not have or it is hidden so well I couldn't find it).

You can store it in the car. Just put a strap around the shock towers and wrap it below the bell housing. It will be easier to install out of the car. this is due to the rotation of the throwout bearing on the clutch. I have a hard enough time out of the car. I have tried and failed doing it in the car.
