First drive
After picking up my '75 Carrera about a month ago, I got it back from the shop yesterday and took the first real drive. I am hooked!!! It still needs a lot of work but the fealing of that flat 6 sitting right behind me was amazing.
the car needed a good tune up after sitting for over 5 years but after cleaning the gas tank and getting a new fuel filter, new distributer cap, points, and other random stuff ( missing fuzes), it fired right up. The idle is good and after about 5 mins on the road the smoking stopped and the car ran great. That was till i ran out of gas. It seems that the gas guage is broken, and i just about made it to the gas station. Glad that the car is not that heavy. I had been doubting my purchase but after this first drive the restoration is back on. |

All the smoke did worry me but I knew there was probably about a liter of oil on the manifolds. You could see me comming!!! Looked like something from a Jame Bond movie or something. I did find i have a oil leak on the driver side some where, but it seems very slow.
A beautiful day in western MD and just me and my new 911. It was a good day

GTI,
Once, when I over-filled the oil tank, I had smoke coming out of the exhaust as if I were spraying for mosquitoes. The oil expands under heat, it backs into the air chamber, gets ingested with the incoming fuel-air mixtures, and smokes like the devil. Everyone thinks you've blown an engine, but you know better. Sure can be worrisome, though!!!

I checked the oil after the engine was nice a hot and the level was a little high.
Will the extra oil just burn off or do i need to drain and refill with the right amount? What are the size of the gas tanks? When i filled up after running out yesterday it only took 10 gallons, is this right? |

Hi GTI,
1. If there is just a little extra oil , it will burn off, but with the aforementioned smoke. The difficulty is to remove just a little. There are two places you can drain, the sump and the tank. The sump holds about 3 quarts, the tank about 8 quarts (more or less). So it appears that you might want to drain the sump, not the tank. But do this only if you truly have too much oil. And then refill, using the dip stick as a guide, not your gauge on the dash. 2. The gas tank should have about 21 gallon capacity. Though my current ride (looks like yours) has the 21 quarts, my earlier 1974 (also looked like yours!!!!!) had a little less, but far more than 10 gallons. Something's wrong with your filler tube, I think. I can't imagine that you would have 10 gallons of water logging the tank. 3. To truly see what's wrong, you might want to let your car get low on gas, and then open the large drain on the bottom of the tank (you'll need a reversed spark-plug socket to open her up, since it is a 21mm socket (plus or minus), and the spark plug socket, reversed, fits. But realize that any "residue" gas will spill out in a hurry, so plan ahead. Then you can check to see what else comes out of that tank. Ohterwise, there is a problem with your filler tube, and might be blocking any more gas from entering the tank.

21 gallon tank? Yea i got a problem, take to crawl back under there and take another fuel bath.
Towards the end of the drive yesterday the smoking had stopped and the oil level was at a more normal level. |

Then you really do have to investigate why you're able to fill only 10 gallons. Most Porsche have large fuel tanks to allow you long range.
Also note that I DID SAY TO DRAW DOWN YOUR FUEL before you open the lower drain Please read the entire post, not just the first and last words.

Trailer & car for 5K?! Good candidate for a track weapon. Looks like a great deal. Cool color scheme. Brown is in. You might say its' the new black.

now just hold on one second. dont be opening that drainplug. do it the safe way. take out the five nuts that hold the fuel level sender in. slide it out, and take a careful peek into the hole. dont use a candle for illumination
. get a flashlight. i dont know why you cant get to the last 11 gallons of fuel. the pickup line is at the bottom. as a bonus, you get to turn your sender over to see if the float is moving freely.

Sorry GTI, I didn't mean to imply anything, except that I was responding to your statement ".....and take another fuel bath".
But you do have a problem, and the only thing I can think of is that your filler tube is somehow to blame. All Porsche tanks are more than 10 gallons, and even if it's been bashed in on the bottom, there would still be more than a 10 gallon capacity. Check inside the front trunk, where you can see the filler tube going into the tank. You could also remove the round plate which is the top of the fuel gauge sensor, and pull that out without emptying your tank. Just be careful with the fumes resulting from that removal.

Okay you guys, sheeeeeesh!!
Here is a picture of my tank, before the restoration, (turn your head sideways - this should be rotated 90 degrees). Note the large diameter filler tube, the smaller diameter vent, and the top plate of the fuel guage sensor. If yours are bent or damaged, or missing, that might account to why you are getting only 10 gallons into your tank. Is there a tiger in your tank ? wink, wink.
