Opinion on 901 trans
Ive got a 901/13 trans out of a 69. Ive also got a 71 roller. I figure I'll watch for a motor , 3.2 or 3.0 or who knows what to show up in the classifieds.
What would be needed to make the trans work with a later motor? Is it worth the trouble? ![]()

It's easier to start with the a '70 or '71 911 transmission since the clutch arrangement is the same as for the later SC's. Otherwise you'll need to replace the flywheel and clutch assembly on the engine to fit the 901 gearbox.

not to mention the HORRIBLE shift pattern on the 901.
(ok maybe its just me, but i could NOT get used to it. I would constantly select the wrong gear..)

I had a 69 911E that I swapped in a 3.0 motor.
I used a 70/71 trans. Required a different clutch cable and while I was in there I replaced the clutch package. The clutch package for 70/71 transmissions is much more expensive than a early package....but to make the 69 trans work with a 3.0 you need a special flywheel so the costs are about the same. Of course you need to buy a 70/71 trans or swap with someone that wants a 69 trans. If you decide to go with the 70/71 trans let me know I have an extra brand new clutch cable sitting on my shelf. Which reminds me you also need the clutch end thing which is unique to the 70/71 trans. Randy-- what do you mean about the CVs? My 69 CVs bolted right up to a 70/71 trans. Some don't like the 901 trans compared to the 915. I liked the shift pattern and found it easier to shift. YMMV.

Sounds like it would be better to look for a 70-71 or just go with a 915. Thanks anyway. Just trying to save a few bucks if I could. Maybe I'll be able to find a motor /trans package. I'm in no hurry. Just trying to make some plans for the 71.
Thanks.

That 69T tranny would be fantastic. Its AFMSX gearing would be lower than the corresponding 70-71 type 911 gearing. you would need a 215 flywheel and clutch setup for a later engine.
The 901 pattern kicks butt. much better than the 915. There is only one cross over plane for the 3/4 shift compared with two on the 915. Much less chance of a missed shift.

I have it on good authority that the axles from a 69T and a 70T should be interchangeable.
I'm currently going to be putting a '70 2.2T engine and 901 transmission into a 69T Targa.

The CV pattern changed at some point -- you have to be sure they will all mate up.
I LIKE the road racing shift pattern of the 901 & 911 trannys. Bad for gridlock - but driving is bad for grid lock. BTW - Patrick & Kennedy make adapters to the newer, bigger engines. Be sure and check the parts over - the flywheel they sent me was out of balance. I have put up (old) threads on 2 or 3 of the items above if you do a search. Good Luck.
