Question Power loss @ 4500 rpm

My 1986 930 loses power @ 4500 rpm and unless I let off the throttle it dies. Yesterday it started to backfire and tried to die just cruising down the road at 10 mph. I then got on the freeway and was doing 70 and it started to backfire continuously for about 10 miles then it quit. I lifted the hood and the exhaust was so hot it glowed bright red. After leaving it on the freeway for a couple of hours I got back in and it started right up then after a couple minutes died again and would not start for any length of time at all. I had it towed home by Triple A. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Temp gauge showed normal. I was thinking turbo also but just had it rebuilt 6,000 miles ago. The car revved up fine while sitting but would not rev past 4,500 rpm driving. There is no cat on this car, all parts are aftermarket as far as the exhaust system, turbo, intercooler, cams, oil pump and coolers, etc. go. The car was putting out 380 hp before I rebuilt the entire engine 6,000 miles ago. It is probably putting out 450 now because of the rebuild and the clutch was week until I installed a brand new clutch just recently. With the week clutch the car would not pull past 4,000 rpm without the clutch slipping. Now with the new clutch I was finally able to test the "new" engine and could not get it to rev past 4,500 rpm.

Igntion intermittently failing and dumping gas into the exhaust? That would explain the backfiring and cherry red look...

I also believe it is the ignition ianc but not revving past 4,500 rpm has me thinking it may be fuel related. I will post the results after this week-end of troubleshooting.
