Pics of oil cap

Can anyone post photos of the inside and outside of a 72 oil cap. I am not certian that I have the right one as it does not fit well.

On the left is an original (or so I believe) and the right is a recent replacement from Stoddard.

Wait a minute. Isn't that one on the left a 710 cap?

If you put it on, and it just seems to pop off, turn it 180 degrees and try again. The spring/retainer inside seems to be worn out on this one. The 180 degree rotation seems to work for holding it on.

BTW, I have a cnc machined replacement oil door hinge. You'll notice half of yours cracked. Keep your hand on it when you pull the release. I don't know why the spring force is so high. E-mail me your address if you'd like the cnc machined one David.

Sammy, I've heard the 710 cap joke on NPR with Click and Clack, very funny.

Mike: Thanks so much for the photos. It appears I have the right cap but it does not seat properly. I also think the girl who helped me at Stoddards gave me the wrong part number, as this does not match the photo on their web site. Now that I know I have the correct cap, I will try to see if it can be fixed so that it will stay on better. BTW - mine matches the underside of yours but does not say "Oil".

David,

I thought mine said 'OEL' ... but maybe that was the non-OEM spare I got a few years ago!

Check your cap for missing cork gasket ... can be replaced with a piece of HD inner tube of the 'thornproof' variety for mountain bikes.
