scary day at autocross today

Well today was the last autocross for the Citrus region Porsche club for this year. The morning started off great with the usual anticipation of the day. I had run 2 runs with decent results. On my 3rd run the car just quit, no warning nothing, dead as a door knob. After fiddling for a few minutes I looked at the battery and my brand new negative battery cable came apart! Where the factory pressed the connector on the cable just popped out. No big deal just wrap the crap out of it with tape and get back after it. On my 5th run my throttle sticks wide open on a long straight section, I'm going 60mph and climbing and the concrete telephone pole is getting larger and larger!! I jammed on the brakes and slid quite a ways before the throttle " unstuck" and I got her stopped. I must say this was only my 6th autocross so the "pucker" factor was pretty high. It looks like the throttle pedal bushing fell apart allowing the pivot point to bind, not my idea of fun. Ofcourse I flat spotted the front tires and the drive home felt good with the car giving me a vibration massage!! There's a reason we wear safety equipment and that was reinforced today. It does not deter my desire to autocross or DE but it planted the seed for better tech inspection by myself, I will not let that happen again. I hope this will help others check on a item we don't think much about. Stay safe and go drive her hard!

It's just your cars way of telling you it's tired of just doing DE/autocross and it wants to go faster.

It's probably better that you experienced these two problems at an autocross rather than on the road.

It's hard to think clearly when you have to make split-second decisions. If the throttle sticks again, reach for the key and kill the ignition.

I had my hand on the key and was about a second away from turning it off when the throttle unstuck.

Just make sure you don't turn it all the way to the left. I knew someone who did this in his 69' Vette and the steering wheel locked and off the road he went. Totaled the car.

Hitting the brakes is a better solution IMHO.

install an ignition kill switch if you are going to do more events with the car next year. if you move up to faster run groups they will require you to install one anyways. BTW it makes for an additional "theft deterant" device. just my .02

Also, make sure you have a throttle stop, under the gas pedal, (oh.. THAT is what the screw is for on early cars or the molded in flange on the back of the plastic gas pedal on later cars) to limit how far you put the gas pedal down. You don't need more travel than full throttle on the motor. If you have too much pedal space left up front, you will bend the throttle pivot and it will get stuck under the tunnel metal - thereby giving a wide open stuck throttle
