Could this possibly be factory?
 

We're stripping an 80 SC down to metal in a ground up restoration project and found this: About 3/16th + of filler on the rear flares. Coming from the inside, there is no evidence of damage, just tons of filler.

Anyone have any guesses on why there is so much filler?

do you know if the paint is origional? if not...maybe done by the guy who did the respray....??

Can't imagine it being factory, at least if the car is stock.
If flares have been added in later stage, now that's something else

You never know.... Maybe the PO ran it into a pole and just decided to fix it and not report it. Did you run a Carfax? Maybe that'll tell you what happened. I don't even know if Carfax goes back that far.
I have looked at used cars before that showed a perfect car fax but it was obviously damaged and repaired. After numerous questions to the owner he finally said that the car was damaged and instead of paying the deductible he just fixed the car. Well there isn't any record of that.

There is no way that is factory, your car was damaged at one time or another, or the fender is aftermarket. I live in GM town and GM doesn't even do that.

bill, thing is there is no sign of damage on the underside, metal is smooth. We're going to take it all the way down tomorrow night and we'll see then what we've got.

Car does have 2-3 coats on it.

So far we're found:
Primer
Shiny brown coat
2 coats of a sea green

We first thought the shiny brown was the original color, but taking the vinyl off the windshield pillar, you get the sea green, then brown under it, no primer.

Can't imagine this thing was ever stripped so bare that the sea green was painted on hte windshield pillar over a factory brown.

Color code paint is still covered by a nasty white enamel, need to get that cleaned and decoded.

Probably the result of a parking lot accident (i.e an SUV reversing into the rear fender). That wouldn't damage the underside.

No carfax on a 1980 model.
They don't recognize the VIN numbers until they switched to the 11 digit number in 1981 IIRC.
