spal fan - push or pull?
I'm about to order the parts I need for the fan install and have read most of the threads that deal with the upgrade.
question: why is the push fan recommended vs the pull fan? wouldn't it make sense to pull from the dead air space around where the horns were, rather trying to push air into that space? ...unless the fan is mounted on the horn side of the cooler, or is that the normal mount location? our host sells the factory install kit which includes horn relocation bracket, which leads me to believe the factory mounted it on the horn side. ...was the factory push or pull? now I'm thinking that a pull fan mounted on the tire side is the way to go. opinions.....rational? thanks Bill K

Most people say there isn't enough room between tire and cooler stone shield for a 'pull' type fan ... YMMV!

thanks, I'm guessing my 930 is no exception to the clearance issue, so I guess it makes sense to mount it away from the tire and all the tossed around debris anyway. a couple of rubber worms from the track would probably render it useless in no time flat.
so I'll go with a pusher on the horn side

Factory is pusher...mounted on the front face of the cooler....that's how I mounted my 7.5" SPAL fan too.

Just finished my fan install on my turbo yesterday. 7.5" Spal pusher on the front(horn) side. Horn relocation was necessary but easy.

I'm just days away from switching out my trombone for a mocal unit and a fan man spal fan. I also ordered the thermostat and switch kit. I'm not sure where to install the thermal switch?
Could someone point me in the right direction--- BTW it will be on a 81 911 SC Mark

I went with a manual switch for now but left everything set up to add a thermostat later if I choose to. I watch the oil temp gauge quite a bit so I will see how I do with a manual switch.

The noise level is not bad. It is not as loud as a late model car equipped with an electric fan on the radiator. I used a factory relay socket and relay and placed it in the opening where the cruise control would be if equipped.

Quote:
(usually) A push will stir the air (better) causing more tumbling of air over the surfaces needing cooling.

I'm not familiar with the performance (fan curves) of the SPAL. They do seem to make a rugged package. Whether the blades are curved-back (twisted) or not, I doubt will make much diff' in over-all performance.

Push- most definitely! Why? How would the electric fan motor fare with 250-280 degree heat being blasted on it whenever the car started getting hot ? Won't last long and the plastic construction will get brittle a lot faster
Move the horns around to make space for the fan up front- it will be more efficient and reliable

The curved fan blades simply are for quiter operation....just like the 964/993 fan blades compared to originals.....may even flow less....
