early mirrors on SC

hey all, i noticed my 993 aero drivers mirror is loose on my car. its a real pain to tighten up. i've got the door panels off because i'm putting in RS panels to complete my interior (i will post pics once its finished). however, i really don't like the 993 mirrors on my car. i will likely backdate the car anyhow, so do i just put some early mirrors on now? i mean, will they just simply drop in and fit?
if so...anyone got a pair? (driver & passenger).
Cheers
Kyle.

not sure how "early" your talking about.

but, I'll bet that the mounting holes are in the wrong place. You may have to weld patches and fill the old holes and drill new ones.

the 993 mirrors have a 3 prong mounting points. looks like 2 prongs simply drop in the holes in the door, and the 3rd has a allen head attached to it...when tightened, it pinches the plate inside the door and holds in in place. sorry, i should've taken pics. hope this makes sense.

pretty sure the early mirrors are mounted further forward than the later ones. I am talking anything pre-75 when I say early. ( i.e. non-flag mirrors.)

I can confirm this. I just had the flag mirrors removed from my '76 and I backdated to the rectangular stainless mirrors. You've got to have the large square hole for the flag mirror welded shut with a plate, ground smooth and then new small holes drilled to correspond to the early mirrors. Hope this helps.

oh darn it....that is exactly what i didn't want to hear. thanks for the info. Dan, i'm guessing you had to have the door repainted after the welding? or did the base of the old mirror cover up the plate/welds?
maybe i should just install a set of flag mirrors in the meantime........hmmm........

no such luck, you will have to paint.

JMZ is correct, you've got to paint.

My car is undergoing a complete repaint, so the mod didn't matter.

By the way, you've got to drill two 1/2" holes on the inside of the door -hard to describe where - far forward, all the way to the top above the door panel. This gives you access to tighten the bolt heads against the inside of the exterior sheet metal. If you look closely you will see two little dimples in the places you have to drill. They are left over from the early days, the door metal hasn't changed.

The early mirrors use a round head bolt with an internal hex.

thanks very much for all the info. I think i will put this idea on the shelf for the time being. my cars paint isn't great, but not in need of an immediate respray. maybe i'll luck out and the stock flag-style mirrors will fit back on w/o having to repaint. stock flags would be better than the aeros i have on now.
thanks again.
Kyle.
