hood badge fixing nuts (removal/replacement)

best way to get off old badge fixing nuts ? I may be able to get at them with needle nose, but the hole up into where they affix the badge to the hood is very small. Even once off, don't think I want to try putting a finger up there to affix the nuts for the new badge? Any special tool ?

use an 8mm socket to remove and replace the two nuts, have a steady hand so you don't loose them in the hood. the nuts have a lip around the edge so they will stay in the socket.

Mine come off just like regular nuts.

If you are putting a new one on, match the new "nuts" to a small socket head. The old ones should spin right off with the socket head as the cut threads into the soft pins on the badge.
I just replaced my hood badge a few weeks ago and had anticipated kind of an aggravating exercise in getting the old one off. Old one off, new one on took all of five minutes.
Good luck.

"small socket head"

8 mm, IIRC

With respect, removing the nuts will be a breeze compared to fitting the new seal under the crest.

Very true, getting the seal to stay in place while put the crest on the hood is a b*tch.
I warm the rubber up on a lamp (be careful not to melt it) so it becomes a bit softer and more flexible and stretches better.
It gets easier but it is still a PITA. A bit of gentle gleuing may also help.

Use an 8 mm socket to tighten nuts, they cut some thread onto the 2 pins of the crest.

A little Funtak in the socket of the nutdriver holds the nut (or speednut, if that's what you have) securely until you put it on the stud.

As far as getting the new gasket under the badge, I got the gasket to sit outside of two of the three corners of the badge while holding it against the hood, then got the two speed nuts started with a deep well 8 on an extension. Once it was snug, I used a wooden toothpick to gently work the gasket up and over the last corner to avoid damaging it, then snugged the nuts up the rest of the way. HTH,

Thanks for the help folks, I warmed and stretched the seal before attempting. Clayed, polished and waxed the spot under and around where the badge is. ALMOST lost one of the new nuts up in the hood but thankfully managed to retrieve it. I got the seal stretched over the edges of the badge, finished tightening. They don't seem to want to tighten 'completely' like a regular bolt w/ nut so I stopped thinking I'd strip something.

The old badge was gold in 1983 because the back is gold, but it looks like a worn version of the new pewter badges.

Yep, I've gone through this exercise several times and Ian's way is the easiest.

What bugs me is that the red stripes in the new badges are more pinkish than the old badges. You can see this in the second pic in the above post. Even when they start out red, in a few weeks they turn pink.

I bought a new badge when I was restoring my car. When I compared it to my old badge, I didn't like it as well. Put the old one back on.

I like the old ones better, too. Unfortunately, my original is probably on a chain around someone's neck in a music video.
