short shifter identification

Ok, so I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree.

How can I tell if I have a short shifter installed.

Of two garages, one says yes, the other no.

This may help me decide which garage knows Porsches.

Thanks,

Lynn

There are two ways. Look at the shifter housing internals or measure the travel of the shifter.

The easy way...Put the car in third gear and measure from the center of the shift knob to a point on the dash in front of it. Try and pick a point on the dash that is approximately normal (at 90 degrees) to the shifter, when in the neutral position when viewed from the side. Next, put the car in fourth and take another measurement. Subtract the two and report back. It would also help to know what car and gearbox you have.

What are the travel distances from 3rd to 4th on a standard 915 shifter and a factory short shifter?

I seem to recall it's around 5 inches on a standard one. There were several versions of the shifter, not counting the 72 model cars, with three different throws. During the production of the 3.2 cars, Porsche shortened the throw on all shifters 10 percent, with a short shifter being 10 percent shorter than that. There were several good articles on the various factory and aftermarket short shifters over the years. I think some were in Pano, and reproduced in the Up-Fixen books and there may have been something in Excellence as well.
