factory oil chart
At the risk of sounding stupid.....Why does this chart look like this? Why are some oils grouped together, while 10/30 and 10/40 are seperate at the bottom? I must be missing something.

No responses?
I have no logical explanation other than the bottom line might be for synthetic oils. By design synthetic oils have a wider operation temperature range than mineral oils and this chart shows a very wide temperature range for the bottom bar. Where did the chart come from and what does the text associated with the chart say? I am assuming it is from a fairly modern owner's manual because 5W20s have only been out for a few years. The chart also indicates that 5W20 is only good to about 15F. What's up with that? Don

Notice that some bar graphs have sharp ( square) cut-offs...others have arrows ( > .. <) at the ends to indicate they "may" be OK in higher / lower temps, too.

The graph is from Bentlys repair manual (love the book, best investment I have made). There is no explanation.

Guys,
The illustration is directly from thr owner's manual and the lower bar is titled "Fuel efficient Oils" in my copy. They call it synthetic oil in the accompanying text. I am also quite sure that Porsche has recommended other multi viscosities since '87.
