Back after 3 years. Engine number question
I sold my last Porsche over 3 years ago and have been away from the Pelican site. This site is better than ever...congrats to Wayne!
I recently purchased a '76 911S Sunroof Coupe. It was a bit of a risky purchase as the car is a theft recovery, but the price was right. I have no history on the car. The engine number (on the casting under the right side of the fan) is 6560501. Is that number correct for a '76 911S? It has CIS induction. Thanks, |
"Original Porsche 911" by Peter Morgan lists that engine number as a 76 911S US49 state Targa, or a 911S California model. Not as a 49 state coupe. Is it a ROW car?

Hope its a good deal. Pls post more pics when you can.
First off, start looking for an 11 blade fan to replace that old boat anchor on the car now! Yes, it will work for a while but once summer gets near you want all the airflow to the engine you can get. Joe A |
I was told that the car came from California. It is virtually rust free.
What is a ROW car? Thank you. |
ROW means Rest Of the World.
What that means is that Porsche made cars for the US and Japan, and also made cars for the rest of the world. The US and Japan had different, stricter regulations for new cars which is what warranted the special cars for these two markets. For example, ROW '84 Carreras came with 231 HP. The US cars came with 207. The ROW cars came with small bumperettes on the rear bumpers. The US cars came with the huge bumperettes. |
Near the serial number is an engine #.....should say something like 911/81 or 82 or 84 or 85 or 86....etc. That will narrow it down.

Thank you for the replies. I believe that it is a US car. The speedo is in MPH, Canadian cars are KPH. It also has huge bumperettes on the back.
The engine seems fairly fresh, no oil leaks and no smoke. It pulls strongly. It needs some immediate attention, the master cylinder leaks, shifter bushings are worn and it runs rich with a 2000 rpm idle. One nice bonus is that it has a brand new black interior, from the headliner to the carpet. I'll look for the other engine number. |
