101 COMMON OIL LEAKS: Cheat Sheet

Hi everyone,

For the first time I am working through Wayne's 101: Fixing Common Oil Leaks list and have found myself scouring the forums for torque specs, gasket and gasket sealer recommendations and it's been frustrating not because the information is not out there but because there is so much of it and it is spread all over. For my own use I decided to compile a spreadsheet that will act as my checklist when I start putting everything back together. I think this could be useful for others and wanted to share here. Please take a look and if you think anything should be amended, changed or added leave a comment and I will update it. The sheet will update dynamically and can act as a current reference for these types of projects.

My hope is that this list will continue to grow and be a good point of reference for anyone new like me working through these fixes on their own for the first time.

Thanks!!

Dan

Peter Zimmerman has a thread on here disputing the 7 ft lb valve cover torque values. While 7-8 lbs seems to be printed everywhere, including Pelican, he thinks it should've changed because of early typos or mistaken literature. His rationale is strong, citing sump plate bolt size being considerably smaller yet its torque values being higher and changing gasket material.

Result? It's 25NM or 18 foot lbs for valve covers.

I recently did mine and started at 12 ft lbs to see if I had leaks. I had a drop here or there, and ratcheted up to 15 ft lbs on the lowers. I'm still on 12 on the uppers, but feel confident I could go to 18 all around no problem. Peter has A LOT of shop experience.

Here's the thread. Scroll down to his comments:

You've been warned. This will create controversy, like asking what kind of oil 911's like best!

Thanks guys. I just added specs for the exhaust studs and required gaskets which I have decided to pull so that I can clean the bottom of the engine engine, replace the oil return tubes, and clean my heat exchangers. This is for a stock setup. If you see anything that doesn't look right or if I am missing anything let me know.
