What else should I do with the engine out in a 82sc
I purchased this 1982sc early in the summer. It has 64,000 miles on it. About a month ago the clutch started to slip on acceleration and high load. I pulled the engine and transmission out. I am replacing the clutch, changing to swepco oil, changed bushings in coupler and shifter. I have also in the engine, adjusted valves, changed oil thermostat o-ring, breather gasket and pressure switch on rear of engine. I had an oil leak there. The engine already had the turbo valve covers on it. I checked the head studs and none are broken or loose.
The ignition wires looked original so I am switching those to Magnecor 8.5 and am changing the spark plugs. I also installed the carrera tensioning kit. I also changed the distributor cap and rotor. My questions are: What other things should I do while the engine and transmission are out? Do I need a CIS pop off valve in a 82SC? Thanks for any advice Kevin |
Replace the frequency valve (which controls your fuel enrichment), and I'd probably go through every thing on the rear of the engine/fuel injection system that you can't reach with the engine installed (seals/hoses).

Replace the sound/heat insulation that is located over the engine

I'm with TonyG. I have an 82 and a lot of the rubber parts looked fine, but were cracked and hard. I had one that ran to the oil tank (breather hose) that looked fine but when removed, you could see the cracks just by flexing it. There's also the boots on the air intake that can be replaced. They are relatively inexpensive.
If you haven't done the chain tensioner upgrade and pop-off valve, now's the time. Excellent time to set the valve timing while it’s out. But then the affliction begins, and you'll need to swap in new cams and upgrade the exhaust. |
Check operation of the CSV, thermo-time switch, AAR, AAV, WUR, and decel valve. Make sure there are no airbox or rubber connection to the intake runner leaks. Check your oil temp sender for leaking. Check the connection to the rollover switch. Check all rubber vacuum hoses. Check engine mounts. Besides the clutch, check pressure plate, flywheel and release bearing. Change oil, fuel and air filters.

Replace the sound pad with a fancy new silver one!

does it have the carrera chain tensioner up grade??

change the flywheel seal

Replace every gasket/rubber hose you can while the motor is out. This includes the CIS intake gaskets. You will be suprized how much better your vehicle will run with these simple parts refreshed.
Don't be a cheap a$$, Replace the CIS intake boot. Trust me on this one. Replace the clutch fork, helper spring, clutch cable and omaga spring as well. If your rear shocks are soft, they easy to get to while the motor is out. Replace the heater hoses. Clean the engine bay. New sound pad as suggested. If you like bling, powder coat the fan while you wait for all the parts you just ordered from Pelican. The motor and trnny are out take advantage of the situation. This is 8 hours shop labor you avoid if you have to do it again later. |
install the pop off valve, yes!

Just rebuild the engine while you're there.
