Question Very rough idle??

I have a problem with my 1987 3.2. The idle is very bad when I crank it. Any Ideas? Sensor? Do I need to put in an gas additive??

Bad in what way? Low? Missing? Write a 2 page essay explaining in exhaustive detail your idle observations. And, I hope you're not cranking it while you're idling.

Is the idle 'hunting' ?

Going from say 800 to 400 to 1300 to 400 then stabilizing at 800 ish until the next time you touch the throttle ?

Does it happen all time time or only when hot or only when cold ?

Im not sure if the engine is idling bad if the weather is hot or cold...just put it in my 76 911s. Its been cold everyday that the engine has been in. As far as RPMS, I haven't figured out how the wiring yet from the 76' to the 87 tach (THATS A WHOLE OTHER TECHNICAL ISSUE I'M HAVING). The idling is low and missing and will even go dead unless I give it some throttle quickly after starting. After that however, the miss is not as bad, but is still there.

Assuming you have checked for spark on all cylinders, you may need to adjust the idle screw and or the air/fuel mixture.
Do a search and you will find tons of info on idle problems.

Apart from the idle, how does it run otherwise?

If it's ONLY a poor idle, then check for vacuum leaks, O2 sensor, Cylinder Head Temp sensor.

I had rough idle. Turned out the #6 spark plug wire had come loose. I probably would have had rough running, too.

These engines will idle with 2 cylinders not firing, not well but they will run. Start by pulling plug wires one at a time. To prevent shock, remove one wire then fire up the motor. If things are worse reconnect that wire and go to the next one. Chances are you may have 2 wires reversed in the firing order.
Another thing you can do is pull all of the plugs after runnning for a minute or two. You're looking for wet plugs or really black plugs compared to light brown to brown. Two black wet plugs could be reversed.
Remember the rotor turns clockwise, 1-6-2-4-3-5.
Double check the wires to the coil, couldbe reversed.
Vacuum leak is also a definite maybe.
How about timing. Check it with a timing light.
If all else fails, check each cylinder with a compression guage.
Hang in, you'll find it.

You might want to search the archives for ICV (Idle Control Valve), and try cleaning it out with Isoprophyl alcohol (particularly if the engine was out of the car for a while). That helped my 'hunting idle' issue....

edited to add this link:

Idle drops after 20 secs on a 3.2?
