engine serial number

I just picked up my first Porsche, '74 911 with an '83 engine. I want to find the engine serial number so I know for sure what I'm dealing with. thanks in advance, I'm sure you'll see more questions in the future.

The "Search" function on this forum is your friend.

Look at the back of the engine, on the right side alternator upright as you face the engine bay. The engine number is on the left in this pic from the above thread, the type number on the right. Unless you know the engine has never been rebuilt or modified, there is no guarantee that what is inside the case matches the specs for the type #, though.

Thanks, I saw those numbers but they don't correlate to the numbers in the article I read. The article could have been in error.

eng. ser. #s with car pics

I finally got around to taking pics of eng. ser. #s. If anyone can decipher I would appreciate it. Also being a newbie I was unaware of the protocol of posting pics of Porsche with first postings. Sorry for my transgression.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1132598275.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1132598352.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1132598398.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1132598419.jpg

Base model 911 engine ... Type 911/92 ... 150 hp DIN.

Yep, as Warren says its a base 74 2.7 motor.

6 - 6 cyl
1 - base motor
4 - 1974
serial number makes up the rest.
