911 Intercooler

Has anyone managed to get an intercooler on a 911 without the use of the whale tail spoiler? Im looking at the posibility of turbo ing my early 911 either by conversion of my motor or buying a suitable already turboed motor but dont want to have the spoiler can it be done?

Steve

Without whaletail yes, but without any spoiler it could be difficult to make any reasonable size intercooler to fit in.

Here's one example of an intercooler inside a ducktail: intercoolers hanging out of ducktails....

There is also the issue of getting the proper airflow to want to go through the ic, then cool the engine.

Steve,

you can do it easily. Bell intercoolers will make a unit for you based on your flow requirements and space specs.
There is plenty of room in the engine bay on early cars if you mount the intercooler at the same slopping angle as the deck lid.
Another option is to install a C2 electric deck lid for fresh air flow to the intercooler.

Looks nice. BUT, I agree with bkreigsr, problem with this is air flow. You've got to be able to move (cool) air across the intercooler to have it work as designed. My really large intercooler sits way up in my turbo wing, and gets really hot in the summer. I've mounted spal fans under it to pull air through the intercooler and it makes a big difference (too hot to touch without, just warm with). Just my .02.
