Prolonging Cap and Rotor Life?

Im not sure if this is a dumb question or a lost cause but is there any way to make the distributor cap and rotor last any longer than the recommended replace life of 10k miles. Since I have installed my cap and rotor I noticed after about 7k, they are starting to wear out, i.e. not so smooth above 5700rpm. Figuring that the rotor is around $12 and the cap $50. Thats not all that cheap to replace and since my car is my daily driver, Im going to be replacing those two quite often.

I dont understand why a cap is costing fifty bucks. I went to my local parts store and bought the cap and rotor for about twentyfive total. Secondly if 72.00 is all you are spending a year PLEASE sell me your car.

Cap and rotor every 10,000 miles, really? I guess that I should change mine next month when I do the valve adjust. I think Pelican offers pretty good tune up packages for around $135 or so. Includes oil, air and fuel filter, cap rotor plugs crush washers and valve cover gaskets and washers and nuts.

I not sure what makes the carrera's cap so much more than an SC's for example. But now that Hugh mentioned it, the tune up kit is a pretty good deal. I was just figuring I'd bring this up to see if anyone simple ideas, just so I could save $ in the long run. Im not really complaining that I have to spend money on the car for maintence. Im just an inquiring mind, thats all.

Side issue: with all due respect to our host, the tune-up kit used to have Platinum plugs and most pre-`89 owners say that copper is much better for your car.
I'm wondering if your cap/rotor problem might be due to a bad distributor (loose?).

Could it be the coil? I have a pertronix flamethrower coil, but I still have my regular bosch in case my coil could be frying the cap.
