California exhaust options

My 1981 euro heat exchangers are about shot. They rattle from rot. I do not require heat for the cabin. What can I put on my car for max performance, but still pass emissions testing. I need to pass visual and pipe forever thanks to girlieman governor Arnie.

Well, lessee, you can go with the thick-flange SSI's with an O2 sensor bung and bolt on your choice of muffler. You CAN pass the emissions portion by leaning out your mixture. The visual could be tricky, you have to convince the smoggy that the SSI's are CAT's
Other than that, you would have to do the bi-annual swap to OEM stuff.

You will still have to go with stock exchangers and a cat to pass out there. However you can go with any muffler that does not effect emmisions. P.m. Me if you need some exchangers I have some cheap

That's kind of what I thought.... exhaust options don't legally exist here in the land of smog and sunshine.

Curious, should I be able to lift up on the exchangers and rattle them? I do have the smog pump injectors tubing also in the works.

Thanks for the offer mb911. Suppose shipping would be a large part of purchase. I will keep my eyes open for a nice set locally, but may be in touch if push comes to shove.

These exchangers really don't coincide with the car which is in very good condition. What is the factory heat exhangers life expectancy? Don't think this car has ever seen snow/salt.

Some HEs just go early. I've seen good original looking HEs on 200K mileage cars.

As to SSIs....I ran them on my SC for years. They always assumed twin cats.

I have a gutted cat and a non-wired o2 sensor and it passes smog easily. I make sure the loose sensor wire is tucked away.

Thanks for the offer, Eric. We were in Monterey in August, but it will probably be a decade before we get up there again. Lots of cars and parts down here, so chances are I will find something once I start looking.

If it passes smog the way you have it currently then you could go ssis or dansk and still pass with a dual in dual out sport muffler

Go for the SSI's!
From what I've read, they make the biggest improvement on the SC's.
A noticeable improvement on HP, but from what I've heard, it makes the engine rev up quicker... Really wakes up the engine. Sort of like that feeling if you go with a light weight flywheel...

hah! I'm not looking to pioneer a new path to smog prison. Going to shop for a nice stock used pair of HE's.

Really needs to pass visual, so anything without a cat and o2 is out of the question. Smog nazi's won't even test a car that doesn't satisfy their eyeball.

What year HE's fit an SC? Isn't there a thick flange/thin flange thing? What is this oil line I read about in old HE ads... is that part of the exhaust?? Looks like I'm going to have to crawl under my car soon to see what exactly I need.

81 sc engines had thick flange exchangers. I have a very nice set of carrera ones (3.2) that would work well for you. I have removed the extractors so they fit my car. Shipping would not be bad let me know if your interested

I have seen some ads claim HE's that fit 2.7, 3.0, 3.2. Perhaps brand has something to do with fit. I will have to do some research.

extractors are the tubes that fit into the heads. The exchanger are the same between 3 and 3.2 except for that part. These came off a 34,000 mile euro cab and would work. they would be cheap
