Engine interchangeability-flywheels & clutches
Hi folks,
I've done a search on this and THINK I have it figured out... 1) From what I've read, any 911 engine will physically bolt up to any 901/915 transmission housing. 2) Generally speaking, you keep the flywheel that came on the engine, and use the PP & clutch disc for the transmission. So, if I was putting a 78 3.0 SC motor in a '69, I'd use the SC flywheel, with the 69 PP & disc. The exception, I think, is the 70-71. In that case you use the flywheel, clutch & disc and bolt it up to whatever engine you're using. Am I correct?

Any 911 engine will physically bolt up -- no problem..
65-69 "Dish" style flywheel, 6 bolts on the crank (originally w/ push 215mm clutch/pp) 70-77 "Flat" style, also 6 bolts on the crank (225mm; runs with 915 clutch or the 70-71 Pull-type 911/901 clutch) 911SC style "Flat" 9 bolts (915 trans, '70-71 trans as well). Won't hook up with a stock 901 transmission ('65-69) and clutch--need a custom flywheel. 3.2 Carrera "Dish" 9 bolts . May work with a 901 clutch because it is dished too, but I have never tried it. All pre-78 911 engines have 6-bolt crankshafts, and thus must run the first 2 styles of flywheel. The SC+ engines are all 9 bolt. Generally speaking, your (2) is correct. But an exception is using the 9-bolt motor with a 901 trans! Good luck, Scott

or with a 911 trans. For that, you need to get an adapter flywheel from Kennedy or Patrick. They apparently just weld the new hub onto the old flywheel (or vice versa). Be SURE you get it bablanced - I posted pics a couple years ago of what it took to get mine in balance. Their QC doesn't seem too good.... We haven't gotten into the cutouts needed for various electronic sensors - no biggie, but I have "crude gasoline dumping devices" so had no worries. PS - some people call the CGDD's "carbs"

Dumb question, but which flywheels have the pins for pressure plate location? I am rebuilding a 73.5 engine that came with that type of flywheel, but the clutch pilot tool I got from PP doesn't fit the splines, and someone once told me that the pin-type flywheel came from an older car. The flywheel is approximately 27.62 cm across the teeth.

David, someone will come along and answer the pin ques, but you just got the wrong pilot tool. Duh, you knew that, but you have to tell the sales guys what year the PP and disc is for the right tool.
What trans is in your car? Should be a 915, but you could have a 901 instead. That one has locations for pins in the PP, IIRC. |

The car it's going into is a '72 with a 915, but I don't know what trans the 73.5 engine was attached to last time it ran. The engine came to me in a crate.
