Help Identifying Wires !
'87 3.2
[Photo below: wiring mess behind the side/footwell panel on driver's side] Gents: need some help identifying some of the wiring in this photo. Particularly: (a) what is the small clear plastic box with a circuit board ?! (b) there is a pretty sizeable unused harness with a black box inline above it -- no clue what either of these are for, but I'm suspicious that they're leftover aftermarket junk. Either that or a factory harness for an option not placed on this car. (c) the twisted strand running across the photo leads to an on-off toggle switch mounted in the footwell cover -- this one looks suspiciously non-factory. Info: PO had an aftermarket alarm system and it's had probably 3 different stereo systems, the remnants of which I've taken out. But of course I don't want to rip out factory wiring. Dan I am on a similar de-wiring project right now and have the same concerns about cutting the wrong wires. Sorry I cannot help beyond the I know how you feel.

You need to get the wiring diagram for your car, but that all looks like aftermarket stuff for alarms. Get the diagram and track your color coded wires. Good luck. I had the same issue with a 4runner. Two different sets of wires from two different alrams. The alarm installers had nullified my cruise control with their installation. That was a lot of fun to track down.

About 90% of the wiring in your picture should not be there, that black box is aftermarket as well as the relay hanging down. Cut all of those damn zip ties and sort that stuff out. Chances are the have spliced the iginition wire somewhere under the tach. Other than the the ignition splice you should be able to get rid of all that junk.
I really feel your pain, I had a "Clifford" alarm, and a built in radar decetor that looked even worse than that jungle. |
Thanks guys. Can't imagine an alarm and detector together -- what a nightmare. A pro installation wiring will look factory (to me, anyway), making it harder to search and destroy. You sound like me -- can't be having dead end wires all around. Actually found an untethered p.a. speaker horn (for the alarm) just sitting on top of the left bank of cylinders -- about died when I saw that.
I'll be deleting most of that detritus tomorrow and will let you know if it still starts ! Gracias, Dan |
I had the same issue with a Clifford alarm in my 82. I started with the boxes I knew to be aftermarket and removed from there. After getting all the known junk out of the way the rest was easy to return to factory. Just a spiffing tip: when you get back to the facory wires re-run them in some black loom and use black wire ties to secure them. I hope you don't end up with all the holes from pin switches that I did. I hate it when someone asks me " what is that rubber plug doing there?"

try to find all the wires that don't "look German" - stripe patterns, color codes etc.
Those will be the suspect ones. Good Luck |
I see a dozen or more red & blue crimped splices where factory wiring has been cut ... not good, IMHO!

Follow randywebbs advice. Those wiires do not look German. With the wiring diagram check the color code.

Funny, even though nothing is broken and they're hidden behind the footwell cover, now that I know what's back there I can't live with it. |
