I have always been interested in backdating my 911. Right now its in the "confused" teenage stage of body work. I would like to backdate to the long hood RS style of body work or even just an IROC look and im curious about how to. I mean there is information on fiberglass, but it sounds like fiberglass hood and fenders would be a pain to fit and finish myself. Am I right about this? Have people gone with metal fenders and hoods in backdating their later cars? Any information would be great.

Ah, just the thread I was hoping for. My plan is to buy a G-50 Carrera in the next 2 years and backdate it to the RS look while keeping the amenities like AC and nice interior for use as a daily driver. Really got the fever after reading that article on Autofarm's backdates in Excellence. Any thoughts on the feasibility/cost of this type project? I too was wondering about steel vs fiberglass fenders/hood especially considering I plan to use it as a daily driver. Will fiberglass be durable enough?

On a car that doesn't require body work (unlike mine) and simply needs the backdate pieces (glass or steel) fitted and painted, I can probably backdate a car in about a week with paint contracted out.
Glass fenders are not that bad if you are not looking for a concours car. I've got three long hoods in my garage Matt! You want glass or steel ![]() We can supply all the pieces needed from the top glass panel maker in the industry. Last edited by MotoSook; 11-28-2005 at 01:42 PM.. |

Personally I think the 911 amenities are umm....sketchy at best. There are lots of other cars that do the daily driver duties with more aplumb than a 911. The A/C is borderline after it hits 80 without some serious $$mods. Ergonomics? Please. The 911 is like some hap-hazzardly put together software application - buttons here, functionality there, stuff hidden. It is unique and it is full of character don't get me wrong. For daily driving I want convenience and functionality and character on the weekends. I feel sorry for people that rely on the 911 for daily driving - saw a guy driving home this past summer that looked like a wet dog in 90+ plus temps here in VA. Hence - why I gutted mine like a fish to serve as character on the weekends for street/track duty. Backdating is cool though - can't beat the classic 911, amenities or not. -Jeff

Matthew, I really like it the way it is in the pictures you showed on the "I got a bunch of work done" thread, with Duck, no rockers, and iroc-ish valance (by the way, where did you get that fiberglass valance and did you fit it yourself?)
