911 newbie, some questions

Ive been lurking here for some time trying to get educated so I'm real excited that I will take delivery of a new (to me) 1971T soon after searching for 6 months. Its in great restored shape but I have a laundry list yet of things I would like to tweak over the winter months, therefore the following questions for those of you in the know.

1. The Firestone tires on 15" Fuchs are 6 years old and I will replace them. I would like to stay stock in size (I think they are 195 now) but am interested in rubber that will perform better on the street. Pirelli, Yokohama, Michelin, Bridgestone?

2. Where might I find the early Porsche repair manuals for sale without parting with an arm? I prefer paper.

3. What advantage would there be to ditching the stock airbox and fitting K+N rain hats over the existing Webers (replaced the Zeniths in a rebuild some years ago). Better performance? Better sound? Would they even fit under the decklid?

Thanks for you input. What a resource here. SmileWavy

Your car looks wonderful. You will have a nice sound with the watershields instead of the standard air box.

Welcome
Sweet, Sweet car.
As for the tires I like the Yokahama avs series. A little noisy but they hold anything the street can dish out.

Better sound with the rainshields, have fun with it! Looks awesome!

Welcome, and I'd just like to say that's one of the prettiest early cars I've seen in the long time. Now is the time for you to buy Wayne's "101 Projects for Your Porsche." It has lots of tempting projects in it. I hope you are planning on keeping the car original - at least not doing anything that isn't reversible. Congratulations.

"1. The Firestone tires on 15" Fuchs are 6 years old and I will replace them. I would like to stay stock in size (I think they are 195 now) but am interested in rubber that will perform better on the street. Pirelli, Yokohama, Michelin, Bridgestone?" All of these are fine brands. You might also want to consider Toyo T1-R tires if they are available in your desired size.

2. Where might I find the early Porsche repair manuals for sale without parting with an arm? I prefer paper. The factory workshop manuals are the best, but hard to find and pricey. Wayne's 101 Projects book is good. I also have the old Chilton's and Clymer books that aren't too terrible. I think you can find them on e-bay from time to time. Perhaps the Chilton's is still in print. Dunno.

3. What advantage would there be to ditching the stock airbox and fitting K+N rain hats over the existing Webers (replaced the Zeniths in a rebuild some years ago). Better performance? Better sound? Would they even fit under the decklid? Not familiar with what's best for carbies. Sorry.

Beautiful car! Great color. :)

I really like that color. Is that Prussian Blue? Glasurblau? Gemini metallic?

Vipergrün 11-28-2005 04:29 AM

Nice! Love those seats too! Welcome!

Noah930 11-28-2005 04:36 AM

Beautiful car !

Is that the T that was for sale in CT, or
on the east coast somewhere? I saved a pic of that one,
as I love the color. Forgot the name of it, but its a
Mercedes Benz color MB903 code, right??

Congrats on a great find & a true longhood keeper!
Can we see some pics of the interior?
Looks like Houndstooth inserts on the seats.

Nice work :D

No who would go and sell such a beautiful car? Not Me.

Zedone 11-28-2005 01:51 PM

Well here's the houndstooth interior by request. Youre right, its a Mercedes blue color from the 1970s. My wife fell in love wih it so that didnt hurt the purchase any. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1133218259.jpg

Thanks for all your compliments and good wishes. Glad to have joined you in this obsession. Ive dreamed of owning when since i was a young man having my VW bug serviced at the dealer and killing time by sitting in one of these. I will probably have some dumb questions coming, 2 left thumbs and all that.

congrats on your new ride.
about the tire in 195/60 r15 try the Yokohama AVS ES100 but if you are looking for a not ultra high performance looks go with the Dunlop SP Sport 4000 A/S

Redlineshftr 11-28-2005 03:49 PM

Beautiful interior! Makes me super jealous!
