why did Porsche change front sway bar?
 

anyone have any insight as to why Porsche went to the under the belly bar? the catalogs say this change happened with the 74, with thru-the-wheel-well continued on the 930 through 76 or 77.
(my 77 930 has an under pan bar - original?)
was this a cost decision? doesn't look like the change resulted in a less costly set-up as there are more parts.
also, doesn't look like it was easier to install on the assembly line.
maybe they saw abs & psm coming and could not work out the logistics at the time.
maybe they were looking for a more compliant ride to satisfy the masses?
this is usually one of the first things to swap out when doing a performance suspension, right?
just curious, seems like I can follow most of the changes Porsche puts into effect as being fairly logical, or at least a performance enhancement, but his one has me stumped.

My bet is cost. The later one piece bar has significantly less parts to manufacture and assemble (one vs. a half dozen?).

Why do you say that?
To me it looks like both fewer an simpler parts. I also think its easier to install, almost no extra steps when installing a-arms and no adjustment.
110% cost related.

just seems to me it would be harder to wrestle both a-arms with the bar already installed, and try to match up the a arms to the mounting holes, with the bar working against you. the old style might be an extra step, but you don't have to wrestle with squeezing the bar to fit, then bolt up to the under carriage mounts.

Cost, the undebody bar not only has fewer parts but it is also easier/quicker to install and from totally underneath, all are big on a production line

The under body sway bar is actually relatively easy to install even with the a-arms in place, at least up to 18mm (havent tried anything bigger).
