steering rack question

Hi guys I am working on a 65 912 so I guess it is the same.

The steering rack has some play in it. I checked it out and found that the ( for the expalining what it looks like I will say U joint ) U joint that is on the end of the control arm that goes around the stub of the end of the rack. This bush that is in there has dryed up and gone south...... needs to be replaced.

How easy it is to do and do I have to take the whole rack out any advise or short cuts.

Mark UK

this bush in not the wheel end of the control arm but the car end where it attaches to the rack.

Would that not just be needing a new tie-rod?
Unscrew the old one and replace with new.
Not sure if the Turbos fit the 912.

If it's the u-shape on the left, it's the end on the tie-rod that screws into the rack. The gold thing is a spacer.
Or what you are pointing at is the actual rack part that goes in and out.

The U shaped part in my picture that you posted is the tie rod. Turbo tie rods do away with that bushed joint and in stead use a swivel ball type attachment. You should replace the entire tie rod with a new one, either a turbo type or an original type.

This involves removing the outer ball joint with a ball joint removal tool then unthreading the entire u-shaped joint from the end of the steering rack rack. Under the rubber accordian boot will be a bent tab locking washer which needs to be "unbent", then use whatever means neccesary to unthread the joint from the rack. It will probably require a huge amount of leverage.

Looking back in the thread now.
Is the rack in or as the picture out.
Remember the one side is reverse threaded.
I found because of the soft rubber you had to twist it before any direct contact can be made to the rack.
The driver's side will be harder to get out than the passenger side.
I took the tie rod off completely and placed two nuts On the "U-shaped" piece. This gave me the ability to place my impact wrench on it to remove it. Took some doing and I thought the windows were going to fall out.
The preferred method is to use the tie-rod itself for leverage but I was hitting the car after turning just a bit.
If the rack is out, I guess you could put it carefully in a vise and make the job much easier.
Soak in penetrating oil first but be careful not to get any in your steering rack.

Looks like I might just replace the bush in there if I can get to it. I want to make it safe.

Hmm more to it..

cheers for the info and I will let you know how I got on.

You'll kill the rubber for sure when you remove the ones from your 69.

The turbo tie rod kit in Europe is about €130.

That equals about $260 US?
Are you not closer to Germany than us?
Maybe a day trip is in order!
There have been numerous threads regarding the Lemforder be the ones of choice. The others have locking nuts instead of castle nuts, and apparently weaker boots.
I personally put on the cheaper ones as I didn't know the difference. These comments have always been from the people buying the Lemforders. I haven't seen any examples of the others having problems.
So you are in the UK. Do you know Jim.

Nah, more like $150 + 16% german VAT.

Sometimes you can wonder if Germany isn't on the other side of the planet....
