newbie fuel pump help

i recently installed a universal fuel pump. the pump runs cold with gas but nothing in the clear glass filter at motor. is it possible that the wires are reversed and motor pumping in fuel tank? the car is a 77 S with hacked wires. thanks for any and all help. roger
i am new to ng and hope ive used correct protocols.

You should not see much gas in the filter unless you are running too much pressure. You should see about 1/8 inch or so in the bottom of the filter. Easy test is to just remove the fuel line from "out" side of the filter and see if it will pump out gas into a container.

thanks roger

i should have gave more info. ive installed a fram racing gas filter as well as full gas filter/water separator. the glass holley is for visual inspection only. i live in so. fl. the land of bad gas and plenty rain. i am dressed in 930 garb with a great opening for webers, kn filters, prefilters with fabricated alum. hats. its very busy back there. to have the pump stamped + or - would have been to easy. i checked the pos lead with voltmeter. even listened in the gas filler for gurgling and indexed out spout with the fuel line to rear. i know this car was converted from f.i. to carbs. could it be the wrong pump from the get go? r

wrong or right pump it should still be pumping gas if it is hooked up right. Most pumps just have a black and red wire running from the motor. If you only have connectors, then reverser them. You won't hurt anything in the pump.

I would avoid anything with clear glass in it - the danger of an engine fire is just too great.

What unviversal pump did you use wa it a Pierburg, a Walbro, a Holley, or a bosch? was it a direct bolt in or did you have to adapt the lines?

re: steve, i wish i knew. it came in a white box with serial #. the pump itself was direct fit. no stampings as to manufactor, country of origin or + and - . the posts did not include hardware. it was the most basic clone available. i hope if this this helps if only to caveat emptor. r
