Red face Oil Return Tube Hell

Guys,
I decided to replace my oil return tubes today. I started with what looked like it would be the hardest one to replace: the front left hand side tube.
Well, I have all the recommended aids; Dow 111 lube, hose clamp and circlip tool. The problem is I can't get this tube into position. When totally collasped it's too long to start in the holes. Tried installing by sticking the large diameter end in the crankcase firts, still no joy.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

I'd love to help but I'm not really clear on what the problem is.

Can you be more specific or take some pics?

the left front one won't go in until the left rear one is out of the way. the gold sheetmetal tubes are the ones to use. aluminum tubes harder.

Update

Finished it off last night. What an adventure. When I did a search on this someone said the install process was a puzzle. I wholeheartedly concur.
Thanks John Walker; great advice as always.
