What Did My '76S Cost Brand New?

Just curious as I am restoring it and I am wondering if it is costing more than the original purchase price?

I believe it didn't come with AC, it is Sahara Beige with Cork interior, it had the "chrome" around the wheel wells trim and the chrome rocker panels. It is a sunroof coupe.
Does anyone know?

P.S. I will post its adjusted-for-inflation current value once someone posts accurate info. Thanks, Dan

I'm guessing around 16K in 1976, or over 50K in todays dollars.

Picked up a very original 76S about a month ago with 81K miles and no rust for $4300. Some minor chips and a couple of clear coat zits. Might need eng work (smokes, perhaps from sitting), might drop in a 3.0l Euro for fun Car sat for about 3 years in garage, started right up at home and eng sounds fine. Need to do leak down and comp test. BTW, have records going back 30 years! . Original window sticker is as follows:

Base 13845
Metallic paint 395
Leather seats 365
Forged wheels 280
Konis 95
Aluminum fender & panel trim 210
Leather Wheel 95
Fog lites 95
Sunroof 675
Power windows 230
Dest Charge 88
A/C 1195
Stereo 399
Coco Mats 29.95

Total 18130.95

Thanks Lou, That was exactly what I was looking for. My car is equipped exactly the same except for non-metallic paint...and I don't know about the Konis. Where is the plate/sticker with the option codes located on the mid year cars so I can find out for sure?

By the way, the inflation calculator says:

"What cost $18,130 in 1976 would cost $62,243.73 in 2005" - Oh man that is a lot! It also said:

"Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2005 and 1976, they would cost $18,130 and $5,280.80 respectively. How's THAT for an eye opener. These cars were ALWAYS pretty damned expensive, huh?

Although wouldn't a similarly optioned 997 cost around $75K, and a 997S $85K+ today?

Would you be interested in selling it Lou? I know someone looking for a restoration project.

Dan, AFAIK, there is no option sticker on the cars. Had an '84 Carrera that did not have it either. But my son's '87 944 does. I think PCNA can get you a build list for $$ (of course). OTOH, just got a 2002 Jeep GC and a simple email from their web site returned me a complete build sheet from them... within hours.

Sorry GaryR, but it is not for sale. Will be my daily driver next spring. Once I get the eng rebuilt it will be a nice keeper. Been loooking for a nice project for a while now that my track car is done. Got a nice 996 for sale if interested... Lou

Yes, of course, but they are MUCH more sophisticated cars with systems that no one could have dreamed of in 1976. SO of course they cost more to produce

Nice looking mid-year Lou, very solid score. I wonder what that color is called?

In the spirit of of "I'll-show-you-mine-if-you-show-me-yours" here's a couple of recent in-process shots of my '76 in the paint shop. She SHOULD (Yeah, right!) be home by next week.

My 76S came with AC. It has long been removed though. Still have everything.

Nice car Dan. Exactly like mine, except of course I have the Targa version.

I wonder what the price difference was between a Coupe and a Targa back in 76.

911SC Pilot,
Thanks. She has a brand new headliner in there, though it doesn't show in these pictures, all new rubber too. Al Reed-restored Fuchs with new tires are waiting for her in my garage as are new H4's and a custom trunk carpet kit.

The next big hits are the interior and a full brake job.

It's called: Porsche 911 1971-1977 By Brian Long. You can find them on ebay or Amazon, it's a great book. It's actually part of a series, I have the first 2. I bought mine for pennies on the dollar through www.half.com

By the way Dan, your car looks great. What a unique (and period-correct) color for a mid-year. Well done.

Thats is such a sexy color ( Im biassed since I have the same color.).

I'll need to get a new paint job on mine also at some time. Only because they did a poor job of it back in the 80's. BUT, I love the road scars a.k.a rock chips. Shows she's not a garage queen. Ive replaced some old rubber, but not all of it. Most of the other rubbers are still in good shape, so they will last until I do a complete, and correct tear down and repaint. Did my h4 upgrade, and added new trunk carpet to mine also. My interior is in great condition, and so far the brakes have worked great. I still may go an upgrade on those.

Heck, maybe at next years Ventura Show & Swap meet , I'll bring mine down, and we could park next to each other to show the Coupe/Targa lines.
